Unlocking the STORM 9530 - Almost there
THIS IS IT!
Guys, it is possible to unlock the STORM 9350 for use on any GSM/US network.
Here is how:
Go to Options -> Advanced Options -> Sim Card
Press the MENU button and select to SHOW KEYBOARD
Type: mep2 (You won't see as you type - best way to type is in landscape mode)
Now here is the catch:
you will be asked to "Enter Network MEP code (10 left):"
As far as I know, the only way to get this code is to call your current provider, (in my case is Verizon), provide them with your IMEI/PIN and they will generate that code for you.
Once unlocked, you can install another GSM carrier SIM card, and if it doesn't find it automaticaly you can go to Mobile Network under Options and first, change Network Technology to GSM/UMTS so when clicking Menu you will have the option to select between your "My Preferred Network List". In addition, another option will pop up to select between 3G/2G GSM network technologies.
I'm not sure how we can get Verizon to provide the code, but there should be a way. I think the best approach would be to call them and tell that you are traveling out of the country (a country they do not offer coverage under the Global plan), say that you will buy a SIM card in that country and want to take your phone with you.
and that is if the code is generated that way - which is my guess.
I also would risk saying that the GPS feature is also unlocked that way. My old Google Maps had an option to connect to external/internal GPS devices, and with the Storm that option is nowhere to be fount.
Notice that the "show keyboard" option appears when clicking in the MENU button when inside the GPS options. Entering a code here would unlock additional options in the GPS menu (options that even are mentioned in the Storm help and are not available in the Verizon Storm, like "my location" which tell you exacly your LAT/LON coodinates - check it out!). But this should be a whole new post, this one is getting too long!
Anyone with possible codes or codes generators please come forward!
Cheers,

Prob not, as far as my experience, you can only push * one key @ a time.
*screen is one giant button.

Got my code... Doesn't unlock anything but the SIM slot, GPS is still crippled. Inserting another providers SIM only allows you to use voice.. Data can only be accessed via Verizon per the Global Support rep.

Ya but you are going to the UK, where Vodafone will be available for you to roam on.
The 9530 cannot be unlocked for use in the US on a GSM carrier...the 9500 however could, but it will be an EDGE only device. No 3g Data.

Just tested with my friends Tmo SIM... Worked. With EDGE data only though. So its possible, but in order to get the code you have to be a verizon customer for more than sixty days (so you're binded by the contract).

You might want to check through your own forum, because what you just posted is incorrect. There are 9530's working on AT&T and T-Mobile. But as you said, only on EDGE.

No. The Storms HSPA band is only for 2100MHz which is primarily used in Europe and other sections of the world.

For all those who want to unlock the Verizon Storm 9530 heres a link and step by step instructions. The thread originates at Hofo, but Engadget and SlashGear have ran a story on it. So all of you skeptics have nothing to be skeptical about anymore, as this is proof the 9530 can be unlocked to work on NA GSM carriers. Have fun.

I didn't see step by step instructions...and the fact that the author of the article reccommends that we not do it? Well, that's enough for me!

The main reason they don't recommend it is because of the lack of NA 3G compatibility. They use the words "reflash" which is incorrect. You simply load another carriers service book, which millions of AT&T customers who couldn't get Yahoo IM did.
Also you must click the link to Hofo to get the instructions.

If you buy a branded phone from Verizon, you are required to be a customer for 60 days before they will issue you an unlock code, and then you're only allowed one unlock code for a period of time (i.e. you can't have your friend get the code for you, then them try to unlock another one.. they have to wait 90 days or more before they can request another one).
Reason why I say Verizon branded is, you can't buy a Verizon phone on eBay, then call Verizon not being a customer and request a code. They have the 60-day requirement because you have 30 days to back out of a initial contract with them. Keeps you from signing up, unlocking the phone, then canceling service; you can keep the phone, but they'll charge you retail for it - You still have an unlocked phone after it's all said and done.

No, YOU got it; just because you did doesn't mean others will have the same success. You can tell people to be persistent and they may come across a CSR that isn't knowledgeable of the policies. I can promise you the person that gave you your code didn't give out too many before someone realized what they were doing and informed them of the policy.

I have some questions about unlocking the Storm. Can you still upgrade the OS. I assume that you can still do it via DM or does it do it OTA. Also if I unlock a Storm for TMO and decide to switch to Verizon at a later date, are there going to be any issue other than reloading VZ service books? ~via BB (wap.pinstack.com)~

Unlocked on T-Mobile for 9 Days Going
I bought the Storm 9 days ago on opening day at the Verizon store on a month to month contract, called customer service when I got home and received the unlock code. I am running great on T-Mobile with full 2G EDGE (unfortunately as Verizon was Fast!) after switching the network settings to manual GSM/UTMS 2g. Voicemail, Web and BES functionality works great!

Just called Verizon and got a unlock code without any issues. They walked me thru the process, took about 2 mnutes. Tested with friend's T-mobile blackberry SIM, works fine with EDGE data. I've been Verizon customer since last 11/22/2008.

Yeah, it's looking like most reps will give it to you. I believe the only criteria is that you account be in good standing. Good job, I'm happy for ya.

Just switched from TMobile to Verizon last Tuesday. Called Verizon yesterday and spoke with Global support. Explained I was going to Argentina where their rates are 4.99 a minute and I came from T-Mobile where they were only 1.35. Explained I wanted to buy a sim card for use in those expensive GSM countries. I was unlocked within 10 minutes using the mepd and mep2 instructions and code they gave me right over the phone. I am now unlocked on the storm and tested with co-workers T-mobile sim using GSM network option under Mobile Network in options. Only thing I lost was the web browser and when i switched back to 1XEV on CDMA it came right back after the phone re-registered.

by the way...you dont have to live in the UK. CDMA will work in over 40 countries.. and their new global GSM sim will work in 200 other countries and thats while still on the Verizon network. Now, If you unlock the BB (Not talking about activating the Verizon SIM for global use) using the unlock codes many of us have done on several blackberrys you can use ANY GSM carrier's SIM in your Storm.
