BlackBerry Storm Tips and Tricks

Starting a list of some useful tips and tricks for
the Storm. Feel free to add more
+
Are you struck with the only one theme blues?
Don't fret, there is a little bit of snazziness you can add to
differentiate your Storm from every one else's.

Go to options > advanced options > Accessibility.
Here you can adjust the contrast of your menus and icons.
Set Contrast to Reverse for a funky light blue looking theme.
Set Contrast to Greyscale for a Storm circa 1929.
*(They both change most functions on the device as specified,
sparring a few exceptions).

+
Your favorite app not working with the Storm? Before you give
up all hope, check to see if it's running in compatibility mode.
Options > advanced options > applications > highlight the app >
press menu key and enable/disable compatibilty mode.
I cannot guarantee a success for you, but it may help.

+
Can't wait to show off the pictures on your device at work,
but you don't want your coworkers to know about the crazy weekend you had?
No problem (as long as you use folders to file pictures on the media card)
Media > Pictures > Menu Key > Exclude folders > select which folders to exclude.
This will "hide" folders (and what's inside) on the BlackBerry when you select
All pictures or Picture folders in media.
*(you can still get to the hidden folders using the "explore" function, and
the folders will not be hidden if browsing the microSD card from PC.)

+
Dang keyboard getting in your way or you hate using the menu key
to get to it? Using a swipe motion from the bottom of the
screen going up it will produce the keyboard. To hide it, do the
opposite swipe starting at the middle of the top row of letters.
Another time saver could be to assign the keyboard to a convenience key.

+
Super easy search in messages.
Highlight the name of the sender of an email. Just highlight for a
second or three. You'll see a status bar appear and all the
emails from that person will show.

That's all I have for now, time to get back to more Storm Experiments

Rearranging your icons?
Highlight the icon > Menu key > select move
At this point, just click where you want to put it, no need to slide it into position.

Easiest way I have found to advance while viewing video is to press the mute key at the top of the device, then use the scroll bar below the video. Scratch that....just tap your finger once lightly, it'll bring up the video player tools.

I sped up the tap interval from 500 to 100 ( i think it's milliseconds so a smaller number is faster right? lol) This is helping me type faster it feels like.
Options > Screen Keyboard > Tap Interval

Also I made sure to enable spell in messages in case I royally flub something up until I get a bit more used to SurePress.
Messages > Menu Key > Options > Spell Check

To place your cursor between letters to fix misspelling...hold finger on word that you want changed until you see a clear box...slide finger to place box where you want it.

Wow me too.....

Now I am trying to figure out if I need to keep a napkin with me because my fingers stay so greasy which affects the Storm...

By the way if you open 3 apps and then your Video Cam your Storm will hang for 30 secs before getting back on track. Tether your phone to your PC will fix the problem after a memory cleaning.

In the apps screen press menu and options. You can change wallpaper and the amount of lines of buttons thatappear on the home screen. Default is 2. You can have 1, 2, or 3 lines. I have 1, i like less clutter.

When sending a SMS simply push the menu key twice to send the message. I like that one.

We know swiping from left or right while in messages has an effect, so does BBM.

While typing in BB Messenger, swipe your finger left or right to go to the next or previous BBM conversation.

Storm Event Log and Alt + E A C E

To bring up the Event log on the Storm, go to landscape and press and hold 123 to number lock. The press "/"/ to bring up the event log. Now for the Storms version of Alt + E A C E press 2*92. Hope this helps.

The menu key seems to be even more functional than it used to be. You can use it to not only bring up a menu of course, but also to select whatever is highlight as well (variation of previous SMS menu 2 X tip, but covers the whole device)

In calendar, your alarm now shows as well. Not too mention you can add multiple alarms from the calendar app (using the menu key). These will appear in the clock app also.

Where are you performing this from? Doesn't work from the homescreen.

anyone know what the hover setting effects? I am assuming the amount of time that a key is highlighted. Is this correct?

What do I do with the event log? I was able to bring it up, following your instructions. I seem to recall hearing someone way that deleting the event log may speed up the phone, however I'm not about to try it out. I'm guessing the event log is a log of all that has happened with the phone, correct? So it probably documents my frustrations for the past 3 days also, correct?

While in the event log, use the menu key to Clear the log to free up some memory. You set the event log to not record any events and errors which helps memory a little bit. I did this with my previous BlackBerry.
