FindIt 2.0 Released

Hey PinStackers,

The update to Convenience Software's FindIt is now available. FindIt helps you find your lost BlackBerry no matter what the conditions, all through email. It works through a series of user-customizable trigger tags that when sent in the subject line of an email to your BlackBerry make it do specific things.

Here are some of FindIt's Features:
*FindIt now incorporates a loud and customizable tone that is set through your profile settings, so you can use any ring you want.
*FindIt also displays a user customizable pop-up message (set through the body of the activating email) that the person who picks it up can read.
*If this pop-up message is closed, FindIt will email you letting you know.
*FindIt also has an auto-callback feature. When activated, FindIt will wait until your lost BlackBerry's backlight turns on, and then will call any number you choose (set through the body of the activating email), so that you can talk directly to whoever picks it up.
*FindIt now also incorporates GPS, and your lost BlackBerry will send you an email containing its coordinates along with a link to Yahoo! Maps.
*FindIt now has a stolen alarm as well. When activated, the stolen alarm yells "This BlackBerry is stolen! This BlackBerry is stolen!" and can only be silenced through a battery pull, so any would-be thieves will drop it immediately.

FindIt is $4.99 and comes with a 30-day money back guarantee.

A 3 day demo, along with more information is available here.

For previous customers, an email containing your free upgrade will be sent some time this weekend. If you do not receive your upgrade email by Tuesday please contact us at:
admin@conveniencesoftware.com

If no one posts a definitive answer, I'd suggest downloading the demo OTA. That way, you can REALLY be sure before deciding whether to purchase it or not.

Re: FindIt 2.0 Released

Yea that's what I did. I downloaded the Demo. And I got this error when I clicked on it,
>>>Error starting FinditDemo: Class 'javax.microedition.media.Player' not found<<<
So I guess it won't work with my OS.

Re: FindIt 2.0 Released

Here is a quote of something I posted on another board regarding FindIt 2.0:

As a FindIt v1.x user, I had to opportunity to preview and give feedback on v2.0 of FindIt. I think it has the right mix of features and simplicity that make this application invaluable, yet also be a "set it and forget it" kind of program.

The author has added some nice touches, which although he has mentioned them above, I may reiterate and expand on why I like them.

First and foremost, while having GPS hardware and software capability on your phone is cool and all that, usually it is "too late" once you've lost your phone, since it is unlikely that the GPS tracking software was running at the time of the loss. GPS web tracking applications are all big battery drainers so most of us have it off. Well, FindIt has the ability to TURN ON the GPS and if it finds the coordinates, it will email them back to you. Of course, if the phone is in a desk drawer in an office building, it won't be able to detect the coordinates but if it's in a car or outside, it can.

Secondly, I like the fact that it uses the BB Profiles to set your alert. On some phones, a built in tone might be adequately loud, while on others, it might be too quiet. By being able to set your own tones within each profile, (e.g. a loud alarm tone within your Vibrate or Quiet profile), you can be assured what is being played and at what volume. It also means that the tone won't keep playing forever until the battery is dead.

A nice touch is the confirmation email sent back to you when someone has clicked the "OK" button to acknowledge the alarm. That tells you that a human being is physically holding the phone and has shut the alert off and likely has read your message dialog box. It tells you that the phone is not in a desk drawer and no one can hear it playing it's alert tones. You can now then call the phone yourself, or have the phone initiate a call to you, whichever you choose; knowing that someone is there to possibly answer it.

The Stolen tag is a last resort. If you've tried to call the phone, have the finder call you, etc., but are getting no response, then you can trigger the Stolen function; which, as mentioned above will result in a loud voice announcement and siren noises that will hopefully change a potential thief's mind.

Basically, you can test all the functions of the application, and then what I do is Hide the application icon so that it's not visible on the desktop. The icon also does not appear in the switch ribbon, so a finder of your phone can't change the settings on you to disable your trigger phrases.

I recommend this application for what MIGHT happen. Hopefully, you'll never need to use it.

I bought the original version of this program a few months ago. I haven't had the need to use it and I forgot the email trigger, but I got the email on my Pearl tonight about the upgrade...gonna download it now.
On top of this, my Pearl has the hard encoded password on it too.

Iwas lucky enough to get to test this version in beta and I will say that it is a real winner. The GPS function will also take you to Yahoo Maps and show you where the BB is on the map. The "stolen" message is so irritating and loud that no onw in their right mind would stay around the BB because of the attention it will draw. This useful program that you won't regret getting!!

Re: FindIt 2.0 Released

I have not received my email on the update yet. I was one of the lucky Stackers that emailed you when you were offering the program for free to the first 5 stackers that posted to the 11-17-07 post. You emailed it to me and I have been using it since that date. I was wondering when I would receive my updated version...
email address: "I will email the address posted with a copy of my post from Nov. 17th, 2007."

Thank you

Question Re: FindIt 2.0 Released

I tried the new 2.0 but I couldn't get it to work on my 8300. I found the instructions very hard to understand. I even had their tech support to help me but I could only get help through Email(no Phone Support} which took forever. Does anyone have a simpler step by step instruction that a dummy like me could understand?

Re: FindIt 2.0 Released

It's pretty straightforward, but if the emails between support and yourself didn't do the trick, I'm not sure we can do much better on the forums... but let's give it a go. (Also, I don't run 4.3 OS, just FYI).

Did the app install okay without errors? If so, we'll continue.

Open up FindIt and the main (and only) screen will look like the screenshot above. We will take this one step at a time. Next to the trigger tag to make the phone ring, let's use the screenshotted example: ring555 Type that there and escape out of the program.

Next, go to your PC and, preferably not from your main email account (in case you have emails from yourself filtered out), send yourself an email. Or have a friend send you an email (to one of the email accounts that you get on your BB). In the subjectline, put "ring555" without the quotes and preferably in the same case as your trigger tag. In the body of the email, put a message, such as "This is a test".

Then wait for the email to arrive on your BB. Put the phone in Normal Profile for now.

Now, I have not gone into detail about setting up the sounds you want to use in your Profiles, nor the GPS or Callback test, nor setting permissions for GPS access. We are taking this slowly. Let's see how this little test goes before going any further. Basically, the phone should ring, a popup box should come up displaying the contents of the body of the email along with an OK button. The sender of the email should get a reply back of some sort which acknowledges that the OK button was pressed.

Anyways, post how you make out and we can proceed from there depending on how it works out thus far.

Re: FindIt 2.0 Released

One thing that I noticed you have to do a bettery pull then send a email to your BB in order for it to work. I had to do this last time with the 1st version of the software for it to work on my Curve 8310......

Re: FindIt 2.0 Released

This program sounds great, so I load it OTA. I test a sample email with a warning message, I get a pop-up. Looks great.

Thennnnnn.......

I no longer send/receive emails from my bb. Looks like I've got some debugging to do, and maybe the developer does as well.

JeffA
Edit - sure enough, my company BES server went down over the weekend. I've not reinstalled FindIt, but my problems were with my IT guys, not this application.

The application just checks the emails in your inbox to see if they have a matching trigger tag to what you set it for. If it finds a match, it will take the appropriate action; if not, it doesn't do anything.

What do you mean by you 'couldn't send emails from your BB'? They had a big red X beside them? Did you set your default email address farther down below in the FindIt setup screen? If not, (I don't know, just guessing here), FindIt may be trying to send the response email (the email acknowledging that the OK button has been pressed) to nowhere and finds it can't.

Re: FindIt 2.0 Released

Hey Klotar, thanks for your help. I did exactly as you described and I get the mail on my BB with "ring555" in the subject but nothing happens. I did a reinstall but that didn't do anything and I also tried a battery pull but no luck. Does this work on the 8300 and ATT. Also I am using BBSmart email viewer. Could this be the problem?

Hmmm... if FindIt has the trigger tag as 'ring555' and you receive the email but nothing happens (no popup box, no sounds), let's check a few things:

1) is FindIt running? Use the switch ribbon (task switcher) and see if it's running. Should look like a small calculator icon. Don't click it, your BB will lock up. Just see if it's there or not in the ribbon. If it is there, we'll proceed; if it's not there, then it's not running.

2) If FindIt is running, let's check your permissions. I'm not sure about 4.3 OS's, but I get there by clicking the Options icon, Advanced Options, then Applications. There should be a list generated with all your installed apps. Scroll down to FindIt, click it once, then click it again and Edit Permissions. Set Connections and Interactions both to Allow for now. I know for sure that you have to definitely set GPS to Allow but for the time being, let's set them all to Allow for this troubleshooting process.

A popup box MAY have come up at one time or another and maybe you pressed Don't Ask Again and Don't Allow. I don't know, it's only a theory, might be wrong.

Anyways, once that's done, I'd pull the battery and reboot the phone and try the 'ring555' test again. Let us know how you make out.

Re: FindIt 2.0 Released

I'm at a bit of a loss then; at first I thought it might be a 83xx OS thing but I see some are running FindIt successfully.

If you are sure that ring555 is the trigger phrase set in FindIt and that ring555 is the subject of your email message, then you are doing it the same way that I am doing it.

While I can understand that the phone might not make noise (if you haven't set your profiles for FindIt yet -- which we haven't covered), I don't know why you don't at least get a popup box.

Let's look at it differently. Is your BB a private device or on BES? Is your phone keyboard locked and/or device locked (passworded)?
