What is Blackberry PIN messaging? Answered!

PIN [. pin] noun

Each BlackBerry device is assigned a unique eight-digit number called a personal identification number (PIN). You can find your BlackBerry's PIN by selecting the Options icon, then clicking Status. Your PIN will appear in the Status screen.

Sending a PIN message
There are two ways to send messages directly to a BlackBerry user's PIN rather than to the user's email address, depending on whether you have the PIN stored in a contact in your address book or not. If you have a contact in your address book with the PIN entered, you can select the PIN using the Compose application. To do so, follow these steps:

1. Select the Compose icon (the open envelope and pencil).
2. In the "To:" list, scroll to the correct contact. Click the trackwheel to display a drop-down menu for the contact.
3. If you have stored a PIN for this contact, PIN will appear in the menu. Select it.
4. Compose your message and send it as usual.

When the message is sent, it will be routed using the PIN rather than the email address.

Note: The next time you select that contact with the Enter key, the PIN will be used rather than the email address. To reset the contact to use an email address, simply follow the directions listed above and select Email rather than PIN from the menu.

If you want to enter a PIN not associated with a contact, you can type the PIN directly into the "To:" field. To do so, follow these steps:

1. Select the Compose icon (the open envelope and pencil).
2. Scroll up to [Use Once] at the top of the "To:" list. Click the trackwheel to display a drop-down menu.
3. From the menu, select PIN. Enter the PIN and press Enter.
4. Compose your message and send it as usual.

Stack [. stak] verb
1.a pile ofthings in large number more or less neatly arranged one on top of another; to put things one on top of another forming a pile, or to be arranged in that way.

Note: PIN to PIN messages are not encrypted and transmit in plaintext, allowing anyone who intercepts them to read them. While this is a remote possibility, you should keep it in mind and not send sensitive information in a PIN to PIN message.

Finding your PIN and IMEI

A personal identification number (PIN) uniquely identifies each BlackBerry handheld on the network. If you know the PIN of another BlackBerry handheld user, you can send a PIN message to that person. PIN messages are not routed through an existing email account.

The electronic serial number (ESN) or International Mobile Equipment Identity (IMEI) is a unique number used to identify your handheld equipment.

To find your PIN and ESN/IMEI, perform one of the following actions:

# In the handheld options or settings, click Status.
# Look for the PIN and ESN/IMEI information on the outside of the box that your handheld came in.
# Turn the handheld off and remove the battery. Look for the sticker on the handheld with the PIN and ESN/IMEI information where the battery is normally located.

How do I send a PIN to PIN message?

Warning: Be wary of sending PIN to PIN messages. When using the BlackBerry Enterprise Server Redirector, all email messages are Triple DES encrypted when traveling between your device and your Exchange mailbox, ensuring that they are indecipherable by anyone who might intercept them. However, PIN to PIN messages are not encrypted and transmit in plaintext, allowing anyone who intercepts them to read them. While this is a remote possibility, you should keep it in mind and not send sensitive information in a PIN to PIN message.

The main advantages of PIN's are:
a) goes direct to the blackberry, doesn't fill an e-mail inbox
b) gives a received reciept so you know when someone gets it

They would be like 1000 times harder to intercept as opposed to e-mail....
good description!

I was unaware of the complete ability of PIN messaging until recently. BB Messenger helped opened up my knowledge, but this writeup really gave some good insight.

Good info. I can't wait to network with other BB users.

Another advantage I can think of is when email is down (off chance!!!) you could still communicate with team memebers at work, etc.

I went to the BB Messenger site only to see a big message stating that Cingular does not support Messenger, which means, I guess, that I can't use it?

Just ignore that cingular does not work stuff. It works very well. I use it and have had others sign up. It works great. Once you get it up and running add me to your contact list.

Welcome to pinstack.

I have an icon question about BB Messenger. What does the yellow arrow pointing up next to a contact's name mean? They're listed as unavailable but I still want to know what that icon means.

Re: What is Blackberry PIN messaging? - Answered here!

I figured it out. All I had to do was click on a contact and select Contact Info and it tells what the status of a contact is.

Re: What is Blackberry PIN messaging? - Answered here!

Can someone help me please. I don't understand when I try to enter pin numbers in BB Messenger it takes me to my Address Book. I can't figure out how to add contacts otherwise and then when I added a contact to my address book it still doesn't give me the option to add the contact now it says request email and the contacts name, I just want to add some pins from some of the groups I've joined.
