Review: IM +

Verdict: User Friendly Interface
Pros: Allows for multiple IM programs to be used at the same time
Cons: Lack of customization for text color. I don't like red while chatting online and this does not offer me any way to change that. Also there is no way to use the spacebar shortcut to insert a period at the end of a sentence.

Price: $49.95 USD
Overall Rating: 5 out of 5

Product Name: IM +

Alot of users have been asking how they can contact people they have on different messenger lists. IM + is one of the many solutions to this problem.
Here's a brief introduction to IM + since a lot of BlackBerry users already use this program.

When you first launch IM +, there will be areas for you to enter your connection settings and account information. This will include the user name, password, host, port number and other settings. Then a connection test will run to make sure you are connected properly.

Once this information is entered, you will be presented with a screen listing all the messengers you are able to chat on. You have a choice of AOL, MSN, Yahoo, ICQ, Jabber and Google Talk. I am using it to connect to ICQ, AOL and MSN. I tried Jabber but I don't know how to go about getting a Jabber account.

When you start chatting on this program, you will be presented with a list of all buddies. There is a menu which lists all different settings from notification settings to history settings which lets you personalize IM + to your desire. My only 2 complaints are: 1) There is no way to change the red color other users have while chatting; 2) There's no spacebar shortcut for entering a period at the end of a sentence.

To begin chatting, just choose a contact from the messenger you want, compose a message and click Send.

This program is as good as other BB users I've talked to who use it. I would just like the 2 features I mentioned above to be incorporated in the next update and it would be much better for me.

Re: Review: IM +

~via BB (wap.pinstack.com)~

But it's not ~FREE~

I tested IM+, and others of the paid variety too. Never satisfied with any of them to use them. Plus, my AOL screen name is dot mac, and I could never sign in because it refuses to recognise symbols (myname@mac.com).

Jabber is the way of the future. If you are not hung up about "text only" chatting with all major networks in one client with one client list, then Google Talk for BlackBerry is the best way to go.

Text colour cannot be altered (one is red and the other blue), but typing is the same as any other BB app. Double space provides the period AND return provides the "send" function. (From what I remember, IM+ cannot do that, but I may be wrong.)

Does IM+ integrate into the message list? Does IM+ allow click-2- phone/email/SMS/MMS any of your contacts from directly within the app? Google Talk does.

Best of all, Google Talk is free!

Now, I have to admit, setting up a jabber account and porting all your contacts from various networks into jabber can be / will be a bit of a frustration for a noob. However, the reward is the outcome!

There are some really good tutorials on getting on Google Talk and setting it up. (I don't have access to it right now because I'm on my BB, which is 7100 and slow. I just test drove a 7130g demo...... I feel cheap coming back to my 7100r.)

If anyone wants pointers or has a question about setting up Google Talk, PIN me. I'd be happy to help out. I'm (nearly) an expert on doing it in Mac OS X Tiger.

Re: Review: IM +

I finally figured out the spacebar shortcut. Apparently, I'd left the MultiTap vs SureType shortcut set to MultiTap (I hate when I do that!) in the Menu choices.

Re: Review: IM +

The 4.1 version of IM+ offers a lot more adaptability including colors and "messages" beside your name like, "Away" or "LOOK AT MY WEBCAM at BLAHBLAHBLAHpoRN.net" I like this product very much. Simple and compact (lots of different messengers wrapped into one product).

Google Talk Connection Error on IM +

Hi,
I've set up a Google Talk account, but I can't seem to connect to Google Talk using IM+ on my BB 8700g. I can connect to MSN and
Yahoo with no problem. Please help. Thanks.
