Ok so first off, I hope I dont come off as some little kid bragging or anything, just understand that I know a lot of people here hang on every little bit of new info on upcoming blackberries that they can get. I'm 25 and married so what I am about to say is not a "my dadddy is this" comment. Its just to give you information. With that said, here we go.
I live in Detroit and my father works for General Motors. His title I belive is the "Global Blackberry Project Manager." He is in charge of keeping everything Blackberry up an running for ALL of General Motors, worldwide. More of the project management side, where he makes sure everyone else is keeping it running I should say. Anyways, I was talking with him last night and he was telling me about his trip to Orlando he just made for work last week which was for the "National Wireless Symposium" or something like that.
Anyways, of course, the first thing I asked was if he had heard of the 8300. He said yes and that he had in his hand at the show an 8303 for Verizon. He didnt have a release date or anything but he said it was a very nice phone. The big part was that he said it has WiFi and that the "03" in 8303 stands for WiFi. I asked if he had seen one for T-Mobile (my carrier) and he said he didnt see it, but he may just have missed it. Obviously we know T-Mo is carrying in over in Europe so they WILL have it eventually, just dont know if it will have WiFi.

Sounds great! I will say the the 03 doesn't necessarily stand for wifi, as the 8703 doesn't have wifi. Just a point made.

IF Tmo picks up the 83xx, you can bet that it will have wifi. If you notice the trend in pda phones they are all starting to have wifi on the device, MDA,DASH, ETC.

Thanks for the info.
If you get a chance to talk to your dad soon, can you ask him if he noticed GPS for this 8303 model he looked at?
Much appreciated.

today i spoke to an exec. i know that works at verizon. i asked him about this 8303. hes a personal friend of mine. so he would tell me. he said he hasnt recieved anything, hasnt seen the device, and hasnt heard of it comming out on verizon network yet at all. also stated that the next blackberry to come out on verizons network as far as a consumer blackberry is going to be the pearl. other then the 8830 and the pearl he said no other blackberrys are in the works or comming out in 2007 at all.

I talked to a big exec I know over at RIM today (I can't tell you his exact position but he's WAY up there) and he said that next month will be released 8300 series "Grandpappy Bear" that will be GSM/GPRS/EDGE/HSDPA/UMTS/CDMA/iDEN/EV-DO and has wi-fi (802.11n of course), GPS, and a 5.0 megapixel camera with 10x optical zoom. It will come to every carrier at the same time and they are all unlocked and unbranded.
Oh yeah...the only catch is that you have to wear the battery in the optional backpack/suitcase accesory.

It will be interesting to see if the Pearl that VZN gets in 2007 will be the newly anticipated release of the Pearl 8120. Is there really a reason to get an old version of the Pearl when the next generation model will most likely be released in and around the month of September? Maybe VZN will be the first to receive the new Pearl along with Rogers. I know many think that TMO will be the first, but who knows if that will be the case.

That would be a first (and unlikely IMO). The 8120 is GSM. There might be a CDMA 812x down the road...

I hope the first poster is telling the truth. I just bought my 8703 a couple of months ago, but I would absolutely pay full retail if the 8300 came to Verizon.

Me too. The 8830 is a small step up from the 8703e but not enough to make the switch.

I don't see it as that big a step up. Unless you absolutely need the multimedia stuff, what else it there? I'm curious to see how that keyboard feels. Something tells me it'll be a lot closer to typing on a Treo than the 8703.

You can send and receive via BT with the 8830, better organisation of the files since you can attach them on an email, synchronize via BT, etc... It is an improvement depending on your needs

Plus the SD storage, trackball navigation (if you consider that an improvement), and OS 4.2! I can certainly understand if those aren't of value to you for a "large" step, but for me it's a big step from the 7130e (which I do actually like the SureType).

The storage capacity and jump in OS absolutely interest me, but I'm still concerned about the keyboard. I type out a lot of emails/texts in a day and it's so much more comfortalbe on the 8703 vs. my Treo, which is the phone the 8830 most resembles to me. However, if there is no 8300 for Verizon come next February, I can see myself making the switch to the 8830.
Out of curiosity, does the 8830 have spell check?

~via BB (wap.pinstack.com)~ I tried the 8800 when it originally appeared for Cingy; the keyboard isn't awful for normal hands and the trackball is a huge improvement, but for us VZW people, there's (IMO) not a big-enough improvement from the 8703e to the 88xx as there will be to the 83xx. Personally, having used the 88xx and the 87xx I'm waiting on the 83xx so take that how you want to. The only plus, at least for some people, is the 88's lack of a camera. That, and until we know whether the 83xx is def. coming out for VZW we don't know.
Me, I'm waiting.

Same here. The only reason I'd even upgrade to the 8300 is for the camera, which isn't a make or break for me but an option I'd like to have.

I'll say this...of the three BB's -- the 87xx, the 88xx and the 83xx -- I think the 83xx is ahead of the other two by far. The 83xx has the ball (the wheel is lousy, period) and it's smaller than the 88xx as well as the 87xx. The camera is iffy, but the key difference -- no pun intended -- between the 83xx and the 88xx is the keyboard. I tried that 88xx keyboard and as much as I'd like to pull the trigger and get the 8803 right this minute (or as soon as VZW starts selling it to consumers), I don't want to be tethered to that 88xx keyboard. I'd love to upgrade now rather than wait -- hope -- the 83xx is coming for VZW, but until I hear from my guy at RIM that it's not happening, I'd rather wait than have to get used to the 88xx.
If/when I hear anything I'll pass it on...hopefully there'll be some good news re: VZW and the Curve soon...

I wish it were true guys, but from what I hear from a friend that works for RIM.......there are currently no plans on introducing a 8300 CDMA device. And, to pour salt in the wound........he says he has had EVERY device that RIM has offered and the 8300 is by far the best. Geeez......thanks pal!!

I dont know. My dad swears it was the 8303 from Verizon he held in hand at the Orlando show. I guess we will eventually see who is right.
