I was wondering if anyone has any data about smoking in the workplace and how it affects productivity? I'm doing a project for my psych class and I'm having a bit of trouble gathering research material. Thanx guys!

I quit smoking 6 months ago and I don't think I'm any more or less productive now than I was before. I don't have any hard data to back that up though.

    Re: workplace smoking research

Well to be a bit more detailed, I am looking to see if anyone has had done any research for their workplace involving the affect of smokers on their bottom line. Increased health care costs, increased lost time due to illness, and less productivity in general.
Oh and just so no one thinks I'm targeting anyone...I am a smoker too. This was a product assigned to me, no choice. lol

This might help a little. It is a study done in England but might still provide you some useful inf.

There's always the commercial of the lady who quit smoking trying to back out of her driveway and not getting anywhere. Taking my cues from that I would say quitting makes you less productive. But than again, I don't smoke.

    Re: workplace smoking research

Smoking in the workplace over here is illegal. This includes cabs, bars, restaurants, offices, and anywhere else enclosed that is a place of work.

Since the ban on July 1st, going to a pub or a restaurant is so much more pleasant. I have nothing against smokers, or the right to smoke, but being able to sit down in a smoke free environment, with your eyes not watering, and not choking is great! Plus not smelling like an ashtray all night afterwards, BRILL!

Same here in CT Barry. Smoking in most places of assembly and all public buildings is banned. Even when I smoked, the "no smoking" section of the restaurant confused me. Like what, the smoke knew where tthe barrier was and would just never go there.

    LOL!

Whenever i used to go to a pub/restaurant, the best bet was to either ist outside, or as far from smoking as poss, otherwise it would just drift across anyway.

    Re: workplace smoking research

There has to be some info out there somewhere fiz. My brain is telling me that its been pretty well documented that smoking has a direct (negative) impact on healthcare costs and loss of time from work.

As a non-smoker, I have always been astounded that employees who smoke get a "free" break every 2 hours to go burn one. But I've also noticed that its getting harder and harder to find smokers in my company. At least ones that smoke constantly. They may smoke socially, but most of the people that I work with don't smoke at work.

I've found quite a few studies online and it's really helped my research, but I was kinda hoping that maybe someone here has been directly involved in a study at their business.

I find i am more productive @ work if i have a 5 min break to try and get cancer every few hours.
Think about coffee for example....If coffee didn't exist, there would be a whole mess of lazy unproductive people. I just happen to be a nicotine and coffee kind of guy...
    Makes me twice as productive.
