Re: My dog passed away tonight

Hey guys, thanks so much for all of you thoughts and well wishes.....means the world to me. I woke up today wishin I didnt have to and now sitting here at work I can barley keep myself together....last night was just horrible tryin to fall asleep with him gone....spent all night just dreaming of my little guy....and I just cant believe he is really gone....my angel here is now an angel for real....and I know his pain is gone forever now....so that helps me smile inside. Bein a dude it feels very strange to weep this way so uncontrollably....but he deserves every tear I have and I would give anything for another day with him.

For those that asked, his name was Duke and he was 14. He was Shiba Inu and Siberian Husky mix

Re: My dog passed away tonight

I lost mine at the beginning of September, he was 12. I cried like a baby while I was holding him as the vet administered the medication to put him to sleep. Didn't sleep the rest of that night, and cried like a baby again the next morning after I buried him in the back yard.

They grab hold of us the way they do because of the unconditional love and devotion they show us the entire time we get to share with them. He's in a better place now, not feeling the pain he felt in his final days. You have the fond memories of him. In time, maybe you'll find another companion to form a new and different bond.

I am convinced we do not choose our dogs, our dogs choose us. Sounds like Duke chose wisely.

Yeah thats pretty much how its been today and last night. Feel so....I dunno....just tough as a guy I guess to feel so much emotion without bein able to hold it back like I usually can. Somethin about a boy and his dog that just breaks all boundaries of love somehow. I am very sorry to hear of your similar loss LaTuFu. I must agree that you are so right...Duke was an amazing companion and family member.....and I am honored he chose to be my soulmate. But yes I will be lookin to rescue another soul who needs saving soon, cause in turn it is they who save ours in the long run.

Let 'em flow, let 'em flow. I hear what you're saying about feeling weird as a guy letting the emotion grab you. But I also think thats a positive. As guys, we shouldn't always wall off those emotions. Its good that Duke gave you this reminder as a final gift.

I am at a stage now where remembering Jack brings a smile to my face. He always has a place in my heart as a noble and trusted companion. When Jill crossed my path, she reminded me so much of him I knew that she had chosen me as well. The fact that she's a typical cute, hard headed chick is just an added bonus. I'm now going to hide from Sadie, Tash, Lori, Stace.....

Yeah, she's a definite character. Much different personality than Jack, but thats not a bad thing, I don't think.

He was more of a guardian of the pack, keeping his eye on the family and never letting anyone around without letting me know they were there. He was never aggressive (well, except the one time a dog went after my son, but thats okay with me) but he was always aware of the surroundings and wanted me to know when we had guests, invited or otherwise.

Jill, well, she's just a clown from the word go. My first experience ever with a deaf dog, so its been a completely different experience. But she's every bit as sharp as Jack. She's useless as a guard dog. I guess I could let her sleep in front of the door and they could trip over her on the way in...

But I see her being so much different than him anyway. She's already learning tricks from hand signals, loves to please. Its been a fun experience so far, and I know he's watching her with an approving smile.

Re: My dog passed away tonight

Duke was similar in that sense as well. He was our oldest boy of two youngins (Black Lab, Jack Russel Chi mix) both around 3 now. He hated them buggin him as he was the patriarch of the pack, and if they played to near him he would give them a grumpy message to that affect lol! But if ever any other dog or person came off as a threat to them or me, he would rise from his resting place, and stand up for us all without thought or question. He was our old man, and the symbol of our household. The one who never begged for attention like the other two, just watched from a far mostly to stay out of the way. But watched over as a guardian angel who never got the praise and love pats like the other two who demanded it constantly. He was always content to just observe and protect. So his memory to me is that much greater for his sacrifice to us all.

Awesome to hear of Jill and her work to overcome her lack of hearing. So glad she has you and your family

hehe. its really not work for her. She's never had any hearing, so she has no idea she's supposed to be any other way.

The "work" if you can call it that, is me having to constantly remind myself that she can't hear anything I say. I've always used hand signals with my other dogs, but I've always been able to give praise with "good dog" and a treat and belly rub. Using "Jazz Hands" for "good girl" is a little new to me. Can't wait to be doing this in the park one day. People are going to think I've missed a med dose with all the gestures I'll be using...

Yeah I think I would even pay to see some random guy walking his dog and using jazz hands throughout
