Just to get something off my chest...this seems the best place for it

Not sure if this si the right place for venting/ranting, but whatever.

I've only been here a couple months, but lately i've been noticing a trend, especially with the new people (newer than me, like from the last couple weeks).

Not to target anyone specifically, but I personally feel that some people are taking things way too seriously and sensitively.

They will post a thread asking a question how to do something. But to get a better understanding of the question in order to better answer it, others will ask for details, such as "why" the thread-starter wants to do what they are questioning how to do.

Rather than giving a specific example of why they want to do a certain thing, they get defensive and say that everyone is now "bashing" them.

Another example is someone posts a topic concerning an observation. Others chime in and disagree with this observation and posts supporting reasons why he/she is in disagreement and asks for the original poster's reasons for his/her observation...none of which are provided.

But again, rather than supporting his/her opinion, the original poster will instead say that people are attacking his/her views.

And another example...someone posts a thread asking how to do something. Others answer that it cannot be done at this time. Whether future software updates make things possible or not, no one knows.

but instead of an appreciative "Thank You" and moving on, the original poster gets defensive and continues asking (or more accurately "whining") and hoping for an answer that does not exist.

Not trying to start anything, just trying to vent a little and to see if others are seeing the same trend that I see...that people are getting a little too testy and sensitive lately.

Mrdeeno, could you post some specific links so we can get a better understanding? That would help in possibly resolving this problem.

    thx,

    Jim

I don't want to "target" anyone seeing how sensitive some of these people seem, and it's not a problem per se, and most of these issues seem to have resolved themselves (with one thread even being locked and me getting a PM from the topic poster callingme a psychotic or something), but the specific threads would be these:

    http://blackberryforums.pinstack.com...onnection.html
Right off the bat, they guy in this thread is getting defensive because someone's telilng him it's not possible to do what he wants, but the reverse of what he wants to do is (see post #4). Then in post #8, he is saying that we are bashing him, when all we are doing is questioning him why he would want to do what he is asking about.

    http://blackberryforums.pinstack.com...r_silence.html
The thread starter wanted a way to PREVENT silencing his ringer when buttons are inadvertently pushed. My suggestion was to get a sleeper case because my 8100 does not stop ringing when buttons are pushed while it is asleep. he continues to say that this does not work and only later did I realize that he doesn't even have an 8100 yet he is posting in the 8100 section, so of course my answers may not apply to him.

Then another poster in the same thread wants to do the opposite, he wants to silence his 8100 by pushing buttons while it is sleeping, which is not possible. so my suggestion to him was that this is not possible and the only alternative is to "wake" it up by taking it out of the case then putting it back in because as soon as it wakes, it stops ringing/vibrating, and currently that's the only way to do it. His response is that this does not work and he wants an "empathetic" answer rather than cynical statements, and goes on and on about how his previous phone did this and he wants the pearl to do this and yada yada yada. My response is that if something's currently not possible, then it's currently not possible and he can either do the next best solution (my quick pull-out suggestion) or continue to whine about it. And he wants an "empathetic" answer rather than what he thinks is a cynical answer. Empathetic or not, the answer he wants does not exist and he's all pissy about that.

and the last one I can't find the link to, but the trhead was locked anyway.

The topic starter wanted an unofficial survey of defects that we've experienced to correlat where our phones were made (Mexico or Canada). He listed as some of the defects, design problems and software/program problems that would have nothing to do with where the hpone is manufactured and I brought that to his attention. I also brought to his attention that he explicitely stated there is "compelling" evidence that there is more defects coming out of Mexico than Canada. And so I asked him what his compelling evidence is, and instead of producing any compelling evidence, he just quotes other threads about people's "statements" about the higher chance of defects from Mexico, but even those statements don't have any evidence to back them up.

So i'm not sure if he posted something nasty after my last post (my posts didn't make any attacks so none were deleted), but if he did it was deleted and the thread was locked and he sent me an PM calling me a psychotic for blasting him and yada yada yada.

I wasn't the only one that asked him for his "compelling evidence", which BTW was never provided. But it seems he took offense to people asking him to support his statements/opinions and considered it "blasting".

These are just some of the examples I've been noticing lately. I will try to answer people's questions as best i can and inject some humor into it, but sometimes it seems that people are just too sensitive and get all pissed off and testy when they don't get an answer that pleases them, whether it's the truth or not.

I think to a certain extent some of this behavior comes from the fact that they are a little oversensitive. And if they're new members, its quite possible that they came from another site which might have a history a TRULY flaming people, and they just assume its the same way here, which we both know, is NOT!
Let's hope this trend doesn't continue. But if it does, we should continue to kill with kindness. Let's hope these folks stick around long enough to see what we're really all about!

killing with kindness, huh? that might be a little tough for me.

If someone asks if it's possible to turn an 7130c and a 8100 into a tazer, I'm not the type that's going to tell them [empathetically], "Oh, I'm so sorry. my sincerest apologies to you that it unfortunately is not possible at this time, but if you look around, maybe someone will come up with a solution for you and maybe future OS upgrades will allow the 7130c and 8100 to function as a tazer. But feel free to continue expressing your sincere dissatisfaction with this obvious oversight in RIM's design of this problem."

My likely response would be something along the lines of "1. Why do you want to turn the phone into a tazer? 2. Did you even read the specs when you bought it?! and 3. if you really need a tazer, just buy one!"

Well I'm glad to see you passed Sarcasm 101. However I think your example is a bit over the top. I'd have a difficult time not flaming someone if that were the situation. I'd be more curious how a mental patient got his/her hands on a blackberry! But then again, we would just close the thread, because not a darn thing good could come from leaving it open.
But I hope you see my point about flaming people. If there is one thing not tolerated on Pinstack, its that.

IF a thread gets out of hand, the Mod team will usually close it, and put it up for review. Now, we do not promote flaming, but I agree that in some of the links Deeno provided, people got a little over sensitive. We are all here to help, and I hope everyone realizes that. We will never flame someone intentionally, although some of the responses do come off that way. While I hope no one requests that a Pearl be turned into a Taser, which, by the way, would be sweet, I do think that people out there, might have some "far out" questions. We need to "kill them with kindness",and answer there question, because like I said, we're here to help!

my taser example is far out, but nails the point...

the BB can do a lot of things, and the BB can NOT do a lot of things.

If it will not do something, and someone gives an alternative (such as sharing laptop data with the BB, or the stop ringing while asleep in the case), then the alternative is currently the BEST solution to that particular problem. Yes, a future software upgrade or program MAY be introduced to solve this problem, but currently the alternatives suggested is the ONLY and BEST solution to their problem (granted they gave enough infromation for us to respond to the problem).

But instead of facing that fact, they are expecting another answer that does not exist. And someone even wanted an "empathetic" answer that did not exist, and I'm still trying to figure out what an "empathetic" answer is (would "I'm not ok, you're not ok, but that's ok" be considered empathetic?)

But then again, that's just me. I'll give a straightforward answer and best solution if I can think of one, but i'm not one for the continuous whining, especially if they refuse to see the only solution is the next best one.

In any open forum you will deal with a variety of personalities and people. The key to the success of Pinstack is that the Mod Team continues to have the same goal and that is to help every stacker that needs help in resolving and answering any and all questions to the best of our ability. By treating every stacker with respect and kindness so that they know we are here to help them in any way that we can. We have Stackers with all levels of expertise and areas of expertise on the Mod Team. So yeah it can get a little rough sometimes, but it's not about how appreciated we feel when we assist other stackers but if we did our best to answer or resolve their question or problem. A quality we must have here at Pinstack is longsuffering so thanks for your assisting fellow stackers mrdeeno, just continue to do what you do and for those times when you've done all you can and it seems like it's not enough, trust me it is; just let a member of the Mod Team take it from there. We will continue to endeavor to maintain control of each and every thread to the best of our ability and maintain a positive, friendly structure here at Pinstack! Mrdeeno take care and have a pleasant rest of the evening and your contribution to Pinstack is greatly appreciated!

Sorry to bring this thread back from the dead...but WOW, I can't believe how long it's been since I started this thread, or how long it's been since I started participating again in these forums.

Now I remember why I stopped participating in the first place. I noticed that most of the threads are different, but it's more of the same. You have a lot of useful threads and posts, but then you continue to have a bunch of idiotic ones, and more "appeasement" of these idiotic posts and posters...like the one with the guy who wanted suggestions on what to say in order to rip off t-mo to get a new BB because his was old and scuffed up, or when I posted that ATT's and Tmo's 3G networks will most likely not be compatible, a guy posts saying I don't have any experience with unlocked devices because EDGE, data, voice, etc. will work....uh, I never MENTIONED anything about EDGE, data, voice, etc. only that Tmo's 3G and ATT's 3G aren't compatible, but this guy has to read into what's not there and tell me I don't know anything about unlocked devices?

I usually participate in automotive forums (Acurazine.com) and usually when noobs come and make asses out of themselves, they are usually corrected pretty quickly (short of being flamed...but being called out that their post was a little "dumb"). Wish that happened here more often.

I kind of agree, I don't think it is cool to that some one is getting defensive when were are trying to explain that what there are wanting to do doesn’t make since, or can't be done, is kind of silly, but that’s all on them. Trying to help any one is going to lead to answering questions that the advanced people are going to view as dumb, but all of us at some point had to learn what we know now

To be frank, I just don't see any "bashing" per se, on this site. Unless I am just oblivious to it. What I do see is, most people here are insightful, and extremely well spirited. With that being said, let us know if you need any assistance, and we are more than happy to help. Enjoy your stay again on the Stax!
