In case you ever wondered "How hard is it to make your own beer?" Well, here's your answer: It's NOT.

Tonight we're brewing an English Pale Ale. Think Sierra Nevada with less Hops. Here's all the stuff, sittin' on my laptop. Now we need...

Water! And lots of it! About 3 gallons to start with. Gotta bring it up to 155 Degrees so we can now add:

The grain! These are Crystal Malts, they will add the color we're looking for. They steep like a tea for 30 minutes at 155 degrees:

After steeping, we'll add the Malt Extract. This is what the Yeast will consume during fermentation:

First the Pilsner Malt extract, again for color. Next the Light Extract, for additional body:

Now we bring the wort (as our mixture is now called) back to a boil. Its important to keep your eyes on it during this time, as boilovers can occur quickly. Like when you're chatting in Pinstack Chat and take your eyes off it for too long...

Lastly, we add Hops. Now boil for 60 minutes. Remove from the boil, cover immediately, and keep covered until cooled to 95-100 degrees. It'll look like this when its cool:

Yummy, huh? No worries, the yeast will clear all that up in a few days. Yeast? Did we say yeast? I forgot the most critical part of the process! We gotta pitch Yeast:

Now we seal it up tight, put on the airlock, and put it into a quiet corner for the next 7-10 days.

Add to our Fermenter (pics to follow), add yeast, seal up, and let biology take its course for 7-10 days. More pics as the process unfolds. All pics taken with my Pearl.

Duuuuude, I hope that wasn't really sitting on your laptop 'cause you spilled some bro! Lol...okay, I am officially thirsty now!

Nah, no spillage on the laptop, it was far from the action.

I think in the US we can only make like 400 gallons for personal consumption or something like that. I dunno kinda rusty on the liquor laws. That Prohibition era was kinda rough ya know what i mean. lol

mason jars don't work for carbonated beverages very well. Great for moonshine, which is illegal in every state.

You can, however, legally make up to 400 gallons per adult person in the household (laws vary by state) for personal consumption.

I love the way the house smells after cooking a batch. I have to get back into it.

Is it weird that the most noticeable thing to me was your blackened thumbnail?

Nope. You missed that thread. Smashed that bad boy right after labor day. Update on that: Nail came off this weekend. New thumb looks kinda funky at the moment.
