I like Compaq myself, I got a 64bit AMD 3500+ (F500 model), 15.1 wide screen from frys electronics for 479 bucks, upgraded it to 1.5 gigs of ram so the total came to about 500. Came with a free printer too, I get about 3 hour batt life which kinda sucks but to be expected from a low priced system.

Edit: Incase your wondering, it came with Vista Home Basic. I put Vista Ultimate on it and aero works too. Aero doesn't always work on low end systems, so if it's important for you then make sure to look into that.

I really like Dell notebooks, but I dont like the company at all. If you are able to buy a Dell outright and troubleshoot all the problems yourself, Dell is the way to go.

tiger direct (dotcom) and newegg (dotcom) are the first places i'd look for lappys on the cheap. they're both factory refurb, warranty return, and open box (they'll tell you which is which on the order screen) clearinghouses. I've bought 2 lappys from them (17" gateway and 13" averatec) and love em both. tiger direct is very customer friendly and FAST.

I have a Dell for work about seven months old and it almost learned to fly last week when it crashed after three hours of work. Motherboard has been replaced once already. Not sure how Gateway is for laptops or HP, might be worth checking out.

speaking of, i saw a commercial for a toughbook. not sure if it was toshiba or panasonic... or maybe something else, but the commercial showed people dropping them, spilling drinks on them, etc etc... looks like there are several versions from mild to wild... anyone have any experience? ive taken mine in twice for VIBRATION damage (from riding in my bag on the train) and it's getting old...

I like newegg for all things PC. CP6169 is right about Dell's. Good lappys. Toshiba's are good too.
Check Costco, they usually have pretty good deals there.

Being a software engineer, I've had problems with compaq and dell. They always seem to crash on me in the first few months. I've been using a Toshiba Satellite for the past 6 months and no problems whatsoever.

Re: Help looking for a laptop

We find that Dells generally need to be rebuilt annually, wipe off the software and start again. This helps the system run a bit better. I know it's not the answer to everything, but it makes our jobs easier. Dell laptops are fairly robust, stay together well, and in terms of hardware are quite good. My "advice" would be to get a cheap Dell system, and bung in some cheap upgrades.

Re: Help looking for a laptop

I know I am little slow making a comment on this but I just got a new laptop about a month ago. Best Buy had an awesome deal on a new HP dv6500... Turion dual core, 1gb RAM, 160gb HD, Nvidea graphics card, 15"4 widescreen hi def brightlight, lightscribe, Vista, all for $750... I actually paid 650 for it because a week after I got it, it went on sale and they price match. So far I love my new machine.

There is a great price on a Toshiba Satellite at Walmart. The model number is L45-S4687. The price is $598 plus tax.

    The specs are:
    15.4' widescreen display
1,024 MB memory, 80 GB hard drive
Intel pentium dual core processor T2080
    Windows Vista Home Premium

get a mac. for 1000 dollars minus the student discount. then you get a free ipod and printer and never have to buy virus protection again! just my two cents but i converted a year ago and don't ever plan to go back!
