User loses his BB, a scenario

    Hello BES gurus,

Suppose a user is in the UK & loses his BB,

what do you recommend doing first,

Ring up the local telco in Malaysia & request a SIM suspension ?

    OR

Disable the handheld on the BES Server ?

Im wondering if the telco suspends the sim, how does the "disable handheld" instruction from BES get to the device ?

    Cheers

I would first disable handheld on BES, then call to have the SIM suspended.

The user called the telco & suspended the sim, before i could get to it.

That leaves me to wonder if the device if found by someone, could be used.

    Thanks

If they have an active sim they could unlock the phone and use it. You should probably lock the phone from BES first, then sim lock or whatever you do. That way someone can't get into the phone to unlock and use it, the phone will be locked and will require a password to pass the main locked screen.

Is there anyway to lock the device once the carrier has disabled the service? Can the carrier do it??

lock the device - this allow the user to possibly find & unlock the device if found.
Give Nx1 days for user to find device.
If Nx1 days past, send wipe command to device & call telco to cancel SIM.

I will expand on NEEDCAFFEINE'S post from above:

First send a wipe command to the device via the BES. Then call your service provider and suspend service on the user's voice/data account. If the device is not recovered then you can remove the PIN/IMEI associated with the account and get a new device. Whoever finds the device will have a nice, free toy but not until they unlock the phone and pay for service. Of course, this will only work if the device is in an area with service, AND as long as the battery has life.

p.s. Please use a password policy of no more than 15 minutes idle time. Personally, I use 5 minutes and then my device locks up. Putting in the password takes me 2 seconds using 1 thumb...so dont be lazy...it will cost you.
    Peace.

I agree with eviljonny. I would wipe it then call your provider. But, since that cann't be done in that order I would go ahead and issue a wipe command from BES, this way is someone finds it and activates it then it will wipe it.

The device doesnt have any security, apart from the sim pin code.

We didnt create any device security policy for that matter.

In this case i doubt any commands from the BES would have reached the device, since the user suspended the sim/service before he informed us.

Will the BES show any status/progress if the lock/wipe is successful ?

When reassigning the user with a new BB, will the request to lock/wipe the lost BB stop ?

    Appreciate all the feedback.

    Cheers

Yes, because the SIM Card, PIN and Device associated with the user's BES account are all new. Don't forget to delete and recreate the user's BES account. This way you will avoid any issues with Enterprise Activation going beserk, (i.e. the Activation percentage going from 70% down to 2% then speeding back up to 98%!).

    Good luck.

Well, there was this one time that i reassigned a new BB to an existing user, no issues there. I didnt delete his profile.

    Maybe im asking for trouble..??

    Thanks for all the replies.
