Messages marked "read" on Email server

Hi there. I am brand new to stacks and to the BB world. I am an IT Manager for a City and we put in a BES for our employees. My staff are kind of learning as they go along and can do a pretty great job, but don't know all the ins and outs yet.

There is one thing that is really bugging me and I am hoping there is an answer. Whenever I read a message on my BB it is marked as "read" on the server. So when I get back to the server, I have to go through every single message again to figure out which ones I still need to respond to. I get 25+ emails per day that I have to respond to and many more that are just informational - so this is really bugging me.

I read the FAQ that says this is a MS Exchange problem - but I know that cannot be the case with me because we are a Novell GroupWise email shop. My staff say there is no setting on the BES or the BB device to turn this feature on/off, and I know GroupWise does not have this type of setting.

Any/all help or even ideas would be appreciated. It is the only thing keeping me from completely loving this solution. Thanks!!!

not to sound stupid... since i know nothing about BES, can't you mark those emails that you need to respond to by clicking on the email with the track wheel and then click on "mark unopened" this way, those will still show as new?

    ~via BB (wap.pinstack.com)~

In the Messages screen, click the wheel -> Options -> Email Reconciliation -> Message Services, choose the appropriate account, if more than one -> Wireless Reconcile should be set to OFF

What this means is that the BB will not tell the BES to mark an email as read / replied to / forwarded.

You may be able to set this as a system policy and push to it to all the BB's on your BES, but I'm not sure of that.

    Hope this helps!

Hi Krosander, if you turn Wireless Reconcile off, the BES server won't communicate with the handheld so you won't receive anything ... which I guess will sort out your unread problem!
The idea with the unread marks is that the BlackBerry should function as you would expect a basic email client to operate, so if you open a message on your handheld then it sends a signal to the server to update the read/unread status (no matter what email system you're using on the server). Stacey came up with the workaround that if you don't want messages you've opened on the handheld to be shown as "read" in your mail file (i.e. on the server), then use the "Mark Unopened" option on the handheld after you've read them.
    I hope this helps!

Marking unread on your handheld doen not appear to solve the problem. Last night I tried this for you, and the only solution I came up with was to turn off wireless sync, as the other stckers have mentioned. If someone can verify that marking the messages unread does in fact leave them unread on the server I will be a very happy camper!

Problem solved, switched from handheld wins to mailbox wins. Now messages I mark unread on the device show unread on the server!

Re: Messages marked "read" on Email server

Thank you everyone so much for the help and responses!

The answer that I needed and works for me is to turn off email reconciliation. No, it does not stop the messages from being sent to my BB from the BES and email server, however it does stop the BB from marking the messages the other directon (on the email server). This is what I wanted - and let me tell you that we called RIM/BB support and they said it cannot be done, and asked why we would want that in the first place.

The other method of marking the message unread, although it does work, is not what I want. One major reason I want the message to stay unread on the server is because in GroupWise the sender can look at the properties of their sent message and know when I read it. I don't want this to happen when I use the BB, because sometimes people use this as a measure of how long it takes me to respond after I read a message - I don't want them to know I read it until I am ready to respond.

Make sense? Anyway - thanks again and I am thrilled that this works!

    That makes total sense!

I know what you're talking about with read receipt.

But I've got to wonder? Why as a culture, especially corporately, we have become so consumed with email?

To the point that we measure the time between a person reads and then responds.

    It's just crazy!

Because I know I do it too!

I do the same thing... Not sure why, but I guess I'm just obsessive when it comes to it... LOL Wait, that means I have yet another addiction! I think I need to seek some help.

Re: Messages marked "read" on Email server

My apologies Krosander, we disable user's bbs if they're heading into some parts of Asia (due to the high data costs) by turning off wireless "redirection" and that's what I read when I looked at Lewis's post, not wireless "reconciliation". Sorry about that! But I am pleased that you've found the answer.
