    Logging of PIN Messages...

I know that running a corporate BES allows the BES admin to configure logging for SMS, PIN, and email messages. Does or is the wireless provider obligated to (or do they) keep logs of PIN or SMS messages as well, or simply the called numbers?

When we receive the monthly invoices for our corporate BES users, the invoice shows simply the list of phone calls, the amount of data transferred, and the number of text messages. PIN messages are obviously included in the data useage, but are they logged elsewhere if running one's own corporate BES?

The carrier will have a record of SMS sent and recevied somewhere. Even if you don't get itemised bills the billing system will still record this.

The carrier doesn't really get oversight of any PIN's that are sent, it's just seen as data/BB traffic on the BB APN.

Does that answer your question? Are you looking to try and find out something specific?

Thanks for that... I figured the PIN portion would be tacked on as DATA charges, and since the messages go from our BES to some other BES, wasn't sure if we needed to be concerned about privacy with having a wireless provider being able to log as well.

    Cheers!

PIN's don't travel from BES to BES. They can be logged via BES but that doesn't mean that PIN messages are transferred via BES.

Are the pin messages viewable per the Log Files on the BES?

    Procedure

BlackBerry Enterprise Server software version 4.1 can log personal identification number (PIN) messages and Short Message Service (SMS) messages that have been sent and received on a BlackBerry device. These logs are then kept in a central repository. By default, only phone call logging is turned on.
To modify the settings for either of these features, complete the following steps:
    1. In BlackBerry Manager, in the left pane, select the BlackBerry Enterprise Server you want to modify.
    2. Select the Server Configuration tab, and click Edit Properties.
    3. Click Sync Server.
    4. Double-click Audit Root Directory.
    5. If you want to save the log files, type the path to the location where you would like to save the files and click OK.
    6. In the left pane, click BlackBerry Domain.
    7. Select the Global tab, and click Edit Properties.
    8. Click IT Policy.
    9. In the IT Policy Administration section, double-click IT Policies.
    10. Select one of the policies in the list.
    11. Click Properties > PIM Sync Policy Group.
    12. To monitor SMS or PIN messages, complete the steps in the following table.

ActionProcedureMonitor the SMS messages BlackBerry device users send and receive from BlackBerry devices.
      1. Click Disable SMS Messages Wireless Sync.
      2. In the drop-down list, select False.
Monitor the PIN messages BlackBerry device users send and receive from BlackBerry devices.
      1. Click Disable PIN Messages Wireless Sync.
      2. In the drop-down list, select False.
    13. Click OK to close the open windows.
    14. Restart the BlackBerry Synchronization Service. The BlackBerry Enterprise Server creates the log files using the following formats:
      • PIN messages: PINLog_<YYYYMMDD>.csv
      • SMS messages: SMSLog_<YYYYMMDD>.csv
      • Phone calls: PhoneCallLog_<YYYYMMDD>.csv

Through RIM's proprietary network. You'd have to contact them for details as I haven't seen this info anywhere on the internet.
