Thats just company policy. Why would someone really need web access on a company owned BB. Its just anothewr avenue for end users to divert from their job at hand.

We are also blocking outbound text messaging, which has become the new IM with cellphones. As great as BB's are, they can become very distracting to users or even addicting (like CRACK). So the less they can do, the better.

Again, what was the point in going with BB's. Nobody gives 100% everyday and how much harm can be caused by IMing? Your company should have just went with Palm Pilots.

Palm Pilots won't do email. Each company has their own preference's on what their employees can and can't do. Everyone seems to forget that a BB's main purpose in life is to send and recieve emails. Everything else is extra and depends on the company on whether they are even useable.

Thumbs up Re: Block all web access from BB device

I found a KB article from BB support. That explains exactly how to do it. Unfortunaly, it only works on certain websites. I have been on the phone with tech support for about 3hours and counting trying to figure this out. Below is the KB article:

Set up Pull Authorization to grant and restrict access to specific web sites on the BlackBerry Browser

    Doc ID : KB10342
    Last Modified : 2007-06-26
    Document Type : How To

    Print this page

    Environment

    • BlackBerry® Enterprise Server software version 4.0
    • IBM® Lotus® Domino®
    • BlackBerry® Mobile Data Service

    Procedure

The BlackBerry Mobile Data Service can be configured so that system administrators can allow or block access to web sites based on roles defined in the Access Control List. A role may prevent BlackBerry device users from viewing certain web sites in the BlackBerry® Browser.
To configure the BlackBerry Mobile Data Service pull authorization, complete the tasks below in BlackBerry Manager.
    Task 1

    Create Pull Roles.
    1. In the left pane, select BlackBerry Domain.
    2. On the Global tab, click Edit Properties.
    3. Select MDS Access Control.
    4. Double-click Pull Roles, then click New.
    5. In the Name field, type the new role name.
    6. In the Description field, type the role description.
    7. Click OK.
    Task 2

Map the BlackBerry device users to Pull Roles.
    1. In the left pane, select BlackBerry Domain.
    2. On the Global tab, click Edit Properties.
    3. Select MDS Access Control.
    4. Double-click User to Role Mapping.
    5. Assign the BlackBerry device users to the appropriate Pull Roles.
    6. Click OK.
    Task 3

    Create URL patterns.
    1. In the left pane, select BlackBerry Domain.
    2. On the Global tab, click Edit Properties.
    3. Select MDS Access Control.
    4. Double-click URL Patterns, then click New.
    5. Do one of the following:
      • To specify all web sites, type *:*/* in the URL Pattern field.
      • To specify a web domain, type *.<domain_name>.com:*/* in the URL Pattern field.
      • To specify a specific web page, type www.<domain_name>.com:80/<subfolder>/webpage.htm in the URL Pattern field.
      • To specify a specific web resource, type www2.<domain_name>.com:80/<subfolder>/main.gif in the URL Pattern field. Note: The asterisk character ( * ) is used as a wild card for the URL Pattern definition.
    6. Select the Service Name that is associated with the URL Pattern. For example, Hypertext Transfer Protocol (HTTP), Hypertext Transfer Protocol over Secure Sockets Layer (HTTPS), Lightweight Directory Access Protocol (LDAP), Online Certificate Status Protocol (OCSP), or Transmission Control Protocol (TCP).
    7. Click OK.

I am actually setting up websense, how did you interlace websense and bes? Were you able to block websites using the Access Control Pull Rules?

You can block text messaging thru the carrier, but the Blackberry has a pin messaging function that can't be blocked. In fact, its needed for the device to get emails because pin messaging shows the device is capable of data service on the network. You can block certain websites thru an IT policy, but internet access is crucial for the device to get BES emails.
