    BES really that expensive?

Is there a 'lite' or small business version of BES?

I don't want to go the hosted BES&Exchange route, dosen't make sense when I have a winbox sitting in a colo center with ample bandwidth already.

As a one-man company however, I cannot possibly justify the asking price that RIM calls for.

By the same token, after losing my BB device this week, I will never opperate a phone without BES address book sync again.

Every BB purchaser is entitled to one free license key for BES Express. You register for it on thier website, they send you a link to download BES Express and a license key. BES Express must be installed on an Exchange Server. If you do not have an Exchange Server, it will not do you any good.

Yes, but if he's just a one-person company, that would be 14 more than is needed.

I would agree with the other poster though, that if you're not running Exchange (or Notes or Groupwise) it's not going to do you a whole lot of good.

BES Express comes with one CAL. You can optionally purchase upto 14 more CALs at about $80 a CAL. Essentially it is BES Small Business Edition w/ One CAL.

It's possible. Are you using a hosted exchange server? Do you have an exchange server?

If you run your own exchange and that is working correctly, there is nothing stopping you from running BES, though they recommend it is on a seperate server from exchange. If there are only few mailboxes on the exchange server there probably is no reason they cannot be located together since you are not really concerned with a "performance hit" by running them together.

You'll have to be more specific.

    Re: BES really that expensive?

I've read if i lost connection to BES my SRP ID would be disaled. How troublesome would it be to restore or enable it back. Would i have to deal with RIM?
sorry for silly qustions i have no bes experience.

    Re: BES really that expensive?

The BES will reestablish the connection as far as I know. I have taken my network down for hours at a time and the BES just worked when it came back up. It is my understanding that you have to have 5 reconnects in one minute in order to be disabled. If the SRP becomes locked then you will have to contact RIM to have in turned back on. This has never happened to me. If you are running the lastest BES (for example BES Express w/SP3, 4.1.3) then you should have no problems. Other versions have had issues that have contributed to this problem. Ensure you never have your SRP on two servers running at the same time.

See RIM KB article KB-05278 for more info...
