You need to type in MEPD at the SIM screen. What you need to look for is Disabled next to Network or else it's still locked.

Re: Unlock Code for Blackberry 8800 on cingular?????

Just wondering if I give you guys my blackberry #, carrier, country etc... will any of you be able to generate the code for me or point me to a website with some software I can use?
Not really down with giving away $20 for that ...
Anyway hit an e-mail if can't do this on the forum. I'll appreciate that

Also I know if invalid code is entered in 10 times, what happens after? Do you have to contact the manufacturer? Can anything be done afterwards?

PS. I'm waiting for a locked 8800 form eBay. Difference between locked and unlocked was more than $20. Seems like people are scared of sim locks, haha.

    Take care!

Sigh... Does anyone read this thread? None of the info below hasn't already been posted to this thread except the permanent lock info:

You can get your unlock code 1 of 2 ways:

    1. Contact the carrier of your device.

    2. Use a 3rd party unlocking service.

That's it. If you don't want to pay for it then option 1 is the way to go though not all carriers will provide a code and most carriers won't provide the code if you don't have an account with them in good standing (and they may have other requirements). In some cases you have no choice but to pay to unlock.

No one here can provide your unlock code. Do not post your IMEI here. There is no software to do this. See the two options above (again).

If you incorrectly enter the unlock code too many times the BB is permanently locked to the carrier.

What do you do if the phone does not recognize sims, ANY sims? The sims are all good, there's nothing wrong with the BB's sim socket, and the BB is apparently unlocked (the sim screen says everything is disabled). No one has been able to answer this.

Just a comment from my own experience to questions about why to unlock the phone.
If you've a GSM phone and you're travelling to Europe for extended periods of time, unlock the phone and buy a pre-paid sim card over there. You'll skip international roaming charges if you've to call local numbers during your trip.

What is the sin qua non of a BB "locked to the carrier"? Will there be some indication that this has been done, i.e. the network unlock code was entered too many times? My BB acts like it's permanently locked to the carrier (no sims work, all invalid, device has been wiped and software reinstalled, etc.)

But the SIM page, when MEPD is entered, says "Network (locking?) - Disabled".

Everyone seems to be dancing around this. How can network locking be disabled, yet the BB behave like it's locked to Rogers? Come on people, give me something here, what've ya got?

I would believe that a wrong code was entered 10 times, thereby permanantly locking the phone to the particular network. Hope that helps.

This is the answer I got from AT&T:

Thank you for taking the time to e-mail AT&T regarding your unlock code
request. I am happy to help you with your inquiry and I apologize for
any inconvenience this may have caused.

In order to receive the subsidy unlock code for your phone, you must
have AT&T's International Roaming feature active on your account. This
feature will allow you to use your wireless AT&T phone and SIM while
outside the Unites States at a per minute rate based on the country you
are traveling in. It is not necessary to unlock your phone to use this
service. More information is available at http://www.wireless.att.com/learn/international/

If you would like to add international roaming to your account, please
contact customer service at 1-800-331-0500, and a Representative will be
happy to add the feature. International roaming features can take up to
72 hours to become active on your account.

Once you have an active international roaming feature on your account,
we can request the subsidy unlock code for your phone. The subsidy
unlock code request can take 5-7 days to process.

I hope that the information provided has been helpful and has resolved
all of your questions. If you need further assistance, feel free to
reply to this e-mail or contact customer service at 1-800-331-0500 or
    611 from your wireless phone.

I encourage you to visit our web site (www.att.com/wireless) often to
view current and previous monthly statements, make payments and to shop
for new product and service offerings. Thank you for allowing AT&T to
serve as your wireless company. We will do our best to ensure that your
    wireless experience is a success.

    Sincerely,

    Jeff James

This has been suggested before, and it may be the case, but I wonder, because when MEPD is entered on the SIM page the Network (lock?) indication says "Disabled". I've had two or three people say that this indicates it's unlocked. Yet teh BB still behaves like it's locked to the network.

This is how I would translate it:

"We own you. We own your children, their children, and their children. How dare you deprive us of the opportunity to take lots of money we trick you into believing we deserve. Now shut up, grab your ankles, and give us more money so we may gild the greasetraps in our company cafeteria.

    Permanently yours,
    The DeathStar"

Go with a 3rd party unlocking service. If I ever have the opportunity to visit another country again, I might try this email approach first, but after getting a reply like that, I'd just talk to an unlocking service. One of several reasons I switched to AT&T from Verizon is that this is at least possible, even if they don't want to help you do it for free. Maybe this has changed in the last few weeks, but I think 8830 users on Verizon are stuck with Vodafone roaming out of the US.
