    please help, upgrade hosed me

    Hi,
I just upgraded this morning from 4.2 to 4.5 on my att 8820.
I downloaded desktop mgr 4.7, and then did the upgrade from there.
Took a while. But then it was done. One of the first things I tried to do was set my old 'Surreal' theme.
Well that totally hosed the device. Now, it just gives me a white screen that says 'App Error 523 Reset'

No matter what I do, it comes back to that. Even pulling the battery it just comes back to that.
Do I have no other choice now but to restore from the pre-upgrade backup I took ?
This sucks !! I hope there is another way.

It's worse than I thought. My desktop manager can't even see the device apparently. I don't get the restore option ( it's grayed out ).
I think I have no phone anymore. I am very upset and worried about this now.
I hope there is some expert advice around.
This is some pretty crappy software that does this !!! What the heck good is a backup when you can't even get to it

    Arggghhh. help.

The surreal theme will not work with 4.5, will brick it every time. Either revert to 4.2 or delete the Surreal theme once you get it back up and running on 4.5. Try that thread RayZ linked for you, it should work, though it may take a couple tries.

You could try booting the Berry in to safe mode and remove the theme. It MIGHT work. To go in to safe mode, take the battery out, then hold the back button (the one with the arrow on it) when you put the battery back in. Keep holding while it boots up, this will cause the BB to go to safe mode and it might start up ok, and then you can turn off the theme. It's worth a shot.

    Nothing seemed to work.
I broke down and upgraded to the 9700 today. :-)
Luckily the stuff I backed up before the upgrade disaster, with the exception of certain 3rd party apps, all restored to the new device.

    Thanks,
    floyd

Well that's much better than trying to fix that old 8820 anyway...lol. By far, the 9700 is my favorite BB that I have ever owned. Sorry that you couldn't fix the old one though.

At least have the 8820 repaired by a RIM software techie. Probably do a level 2 or 3 OS repair and you can stay with a great backup phone. Just a suggestion...
Congrats on a great acquisition though ! The 9700 is a great BB.

Good deal upgrading! 9700 is a great phone, you'll love the extra memory and the 5.0 goodness. The camera is pretty good too (for a BB anyways). I agree with the others you might still try to resurrect the 8820 and either sell it for a few extra bucks, OR to have has a backup device. Have you tried the Pinstack OS reload procedure, as I call it? It's listed in my signature and it has helped MANY folks resurrect BBs. I can also refer you to 2 procedures from Crackberry that also could be helpful, but for your situation, I think the pinstack procedure might just work. It's worth a shot. Use the link in my sig.
