I'm sure they've learned their lesson with the 8100's debaucle. If not, then you'll see the same issues with the 8800 as you're hearing about with the 8100.

I would assume that it serves the exact same function as said key on the 8100 Pearl, which opens up the menu.

Depends on your theme, it's a customizable convenience key - same as the 8700.

On the Pearl I have yet to find a way to customize that key.

And would the VodaFone and Cingular version then have 3 convenience keys rather than two?

Looking at it now, you are right about the 8100. I'd be hard-pressed to think they wouldn't make the front convenience key configurable.

Well, on the pearl it really doesn't bother me, being that it has a convenience key on both sides. 3 convenince keys would be nice though.

If Tmo version doesn't offer a key on both sides, I'd almost rather purchase one of the others that does and just unlock it.

1 key for browser, 1 for messages and 1 for profiles. WOOT!

This is the pearl, but with a qwertu keyboard, and NO CAMERA!

For this I might trade in my 8700c.

I think the lack of a camera on this model makes perfect sense.
The 8100's for the more casual user, so a camera for the casual snapshot does make some sense. @ work, the few 71xx users (16 out of about 900) have them solely for the phone like styling. They admit they don't type a lot on their devices.

The 8800, if it remains camera free, fits the working user much better with it's full keyboard and larger screen. Less scrolling and tapping is a very good thing.

I'm also loving the minimal amount of fake chrome.

Given it has a full QWERTY keyboard and many of the new elements of the Pearl...it is groundbreaking! The exact details are still yet to be known, don't you think?
