Memory Math Doesn't Seem to Add Up!

I hope one of you folks is a "BB Memory Ninja". Maybe I'm not understanding something, but I can't seem to get the memory used and available to add up to somewhere around 64Megs.

From the Help Screen (alt+shift+h) my device shows a File Total of 47,841,280 bytes; File Free is shown to be 23,930,200 bytes. I used Javaloader to dump a directory listing of all of the files on my BlackBerry, and at the bottom is shows 16,795,720 bytes.

If you add the File Total and the sum total of all of the files in the device directory, you get a figure around 64 megs:
    47,841,280
    16,795,720
    64,637,000
Why does my device show only 23,930,200 bytes free? Does the BB allocate some of the RAM for other purposes?

I just checked with someone else in the office who also has a Sprint 8830. He also has a File Total of 47,841,280 byes. Maybe the device does alot a certain amount of RAM for install of apps, etc., and holds some back to work with.
