At least I haven't seen it. On my VZW 8830, the power button on top will cycle the backight off-dim-bright. Tell me if you've heard this one. LOL.

the power button on top? you mean the mute button? only thing it does for me is go into stand by mode (when you hold it a moment)

On the 8830 there is a power button on the top opposite side of the mute button. Hold down and it shuts the device off. Short pushes will cycle the backlight.

My 8300 clearly has a power button. It's the same thing as the call end button. Hold it, and the phone turns off. Push it again, it turns on. I doesn't do the light brightness toggle, which is actually a cary-over feature from the 8700 series, remember the %110 brightness?

he was talking about a dedicated power button on the top like the 8800 has ;-) but yeah I guess technically it has a power button, which is more of a multi-function button IMO (end and power just like the 81xx's, and most regular cell phones have it there). But I'd rather the button like that has

No, it isn't caused by your fingers pressing the power button. The 8830 automatically changes brightness, depending on how bright the light is that's shining on it (the ambient light). If you're in a bright area, the 8830 screen gets brighter. If you're in a dimmer area, the screen gets dimmer. If it goes dim and you don't want it to, just press the power button and it'll become bright again.
You can also press the power button one more time and the screen will go blank, but the power will remain on. It's not in stand-by mode, either. It's just like when your screen goes blank when you haven't pressed any keys and the display "times out."

Power buttons on BB 8800 and 8820 cycle the backlight. its turns very bright when you press it briefly.

    I love it.
