I believe it is for use in a desktop cradle charger used as the power supply connection. I don't have an 8800 so Can anyone else confirm that?

Huh? Why would the magnets need to be visible? Who puts contacts on a magnet anyway?

Anyway, it would be easy to confirm/disprove by holding a magnet over the contacts.

The CIA uses those contacts for secret missions - I can't really go into details here but trust me, you do not need to worry about them (yet).

I'm fairly confident that the contacts don't put the phone to sleep. When placed in the BB provided case the only thing to come close/in contact with the gold contacts is a piece of elastic.

I've tried manipulating the phone several ways in and around the carrying case, it would seem that the magnet that puts the phone to sleep is located below the battery/sim area.

The magnet switch is just below the "n" in Cingular. Think about the 8700c and the plastic holster...the magnet is visible from the side of the holster that faces your body. I confirmed by holding my old 8700c holster magnet (Just got the 8800 yesterday!) over the 8800 and it went to sleep when I got over the Cingular logo. And I do believe the contacts on the side are for a desk cradle. No confirmations, but there would be no other point of contact when you cradle it.

I've also heard that it'll be the contact area for a future desk charger. We shall see!

if anyone still curious about these gold contacts, here is the confirmed answer. They are charging terminals. I tested the contacts and also made a custom charging cradle for my 8820 (same as 8800). One on the top (when phone is right side up) is for +5V and bottom is Gnd.
