The GPS hardware is cheap ~$3 for sirf3 chip in bulk. The mapping data and software to correlate gps coordinates to map is the expensive part. Rim was smart to stay out of it and let 3rf patries to handles it. I have this gut feeling google will enable this feature for free soon like google earth pro has (non-free edition) but the data will be downloaded via internet like garmin's new product.

Kind of like "Cingular has the fewest drop calls in the nation." Yeah right!

I agree! The 8800 definitely under-impressed me. I actually liked my 8700g better except for the thickness, and based on what you get for the money (no 3G, no Wi-Fi, etc), I would certainly wait until the 8820 comes out.

I guess you've never heard of mistakes? Where's your proof of Cingular's intent to mislead customers? The TMO fanboyism is pretty thick in this thread...

Precisely why you should base purchasing decisions on actual research and not hype and rumors.

You can download BB Maps. Cingular charges for Telenav (if you choose to use it) but then again, Telenav also charges for Telenav so you can't get it free regardless...

Keep on waiting. The 8820 won't have 3G either (not that it matters -- read up on the processor bottleneck).

Yeah, I knew that, but it will be marginally more attractive to consider for other reasons.

This is why I never order a device online although T-Mo had me wanting to order the SK3 online after fighting with them about my apparently out of warranty SK2 This has been solved as I'm buying it outright on Monday.
