Thumbs up Blackberry 8800 unlock procedure by Cingular

Hi Guys ... not sure if this is true for all blackberry 8800 models, but these are the instructions I got from Cingular customer care rep to unlock my blackberry 8800 ...

    1. Turn ur ph off and then on

    2. Turn off all the services, like radio, data services, bluetooth

    3. Go to Menu>Options>Advanced Options>Sim Card>Disable the sim card

    4. Type mped (u shud see some more options come on to the screen)

    5. Type mpe2

    6. Screen shud show a small window to type in the code

    7. The code I was given was: 1531477676517008

    8. Press ENTER key on the keypad (not sure if pressing the track ball wud do the same thing)

    9. If the screen shows in a window "Code Accepted", you are good to go ... Congrats, ur blackberry is now UNLOCKED ...

NOTE: Before I was given these instructions, I was told by the customer service rep that these instructions may or may not unlock my phone, so if they dont, he wud give me different set of instructions ... but it worked for me ...

I was not asked to provide my IMEI #, not sure that was coz they already had it in their system or the process above does not require the IMEI info.

Hope you guys are lucky ... Good Luck ... if u have any questions, mail me at paresh1506@gmail.com

Each phone is going to have its own individual unlock code.

Unlock codes are specific to IMEI's... This will work, but the code won't. Thanks for the how to though!

What did you tell them to convince them to give you the unlock code?

You can call and say you're going overseas for a while and need to use an international sim while there. People say that works.

I just used the Contact Us link on their site to request the code. Be sure to provide your IMEI. I don't think they need the PIN but I'm not totally sure...

Codes are IMEI-specific. It's not worth trying with another person's unlock code as you get a limited number of tries to unlock before you can't unlock it at all.

Thumbs up Re: Blackberry 8800 unlock procedure by Cingular

    Answers to some questions:

Q1. What did I tell Cingular to convince them to unlock my phone?

A1. I told them I am going overseas (which infact is true) and thus need to get my phone unlocked. They did not ask me a second question.

Q2. Is unlock code specific to IMEI?

A2. I used to think so, but I unlocked 2 Samsung SGH models by browsing through the forums and trying the unlock codes. So in this case, the answer is no, IMEI is not always required to unlock the phone.

In case of my BB8800, atleast I did not provide the IMEI to Cingular. If they already had it in their system is a different thing. But then my question is, why do most of the carriers ask for IMEI if they have already verified your identity and have the IMEI # in their system?

Q3. General conception is that u need to have the service from the provider for atleast 90 days for them to unlock ur phone.

A3. Not sure if this is generally the case, but atleast in my case, this is not true. I have this service for almost like 20-25 days, but they still activated international roaming on my phone and gave me the unlock code instantly. Even though Cingular's website say that it might take 5-7 days for them to give the code, I got lucky. The rep told me that he has some instructions on his system which worked for me.

I would say as far as the new series of phones go
-including current Blackberry models and others too- the IMEI is
essential for the unlock code to be generated for each specific device.
The IMEI is actually already in the Cingular system since the phone is
    a Cingular only phone.
It seems to be upto the Customer Rep to ensure IMEI is correct.
Unless of course they appear to be very confident it is the Phone Unit
on the Account when customer calls in for unlock code.
My company has a few lines with Cingular and I have personally got 3 E62s
and two BB 7130c phones unlocked by Cust.Serv.
IMEI was asked only a couple of times.
Other times I asked them if they need me to give it to them and they just
said not necessary but, they did confirm what Phone # was I calling in for.
So, each Phone Unit -with it's IMEI- seems to be associated
with the Phone # on the Account.

Yes, I'd say you did get pretty lucky there.
