BB Newbie - Decided To Get A Blackberry Can Any Of You...

Well first off I just want to thank everyone on this board. I've spent a lot of time reading a number of threads and I can't believe how helpful everyone is.

Okay, well I decided to get a Blackberry 8800, I actually just ordered it, and this will be my first BB ever. I will mainly be using my BB for work (mostly just for sending emails and some browsing of sites) and school. Now I decided to get Remote Desktop for Mobiles (this program just seems so cool!!), other than that I was wondering if anyone could recommend any other software I should take a look at, and is the calendar that comes with the BB useful or should I look into using something else. I'd really appreciate any help at all.

Also, I've read all of the "must read 8800 threads" but can anyone else give me some advice so that I won't be overwhelmed when I come to use my BB for the first time?

Thanks in advance for all of your help!

Well welcome to the stacks! one thing you should download is the pinstack launcher, that way you can browse the forums from the bb itself. the calendar that comes with the bb is very useful, there should be no need to download something else in my opinion, it will sync with outlook and some other programs, i don't remember which ones though, the only thing that you won't be able to do with the bb is edit the documents you recieve such as word or excel. you will need to purchase some other program to do this, there is dynoplex which offers eoffice and there will be documents to go coming soon for the bb, hope this helps

Welcome to Pinstack and the Blackberry Family! Dont worry too much about being overwhelmed or trying to figure it all out overnight - just enjoy this great device and know that you have found the right spot with over 300,000 Pinstack freinds when you do have questions! Now...IMO the calendar on your BB will be more than sufficient, it syncs with your Outlook and basically gives you all the same features.

You will find that your BB is actually quite "usable" right out of the box...but when you are ready to "customize" you will see that everyone has their own list of "must haves"...I suggest you read these threads and see what seems right for you - then you can download many of them right here on Pinstack from our growing list of over 200 FREE applications (see the Downloads area).

If you travel alot you may want to look at applications like google maps for mobile (which can even find you based on your cell towers - kinda like a fake GPS) and berry411 or infospace find it (these are sort of like directory assitance on steroids). If you get a lot of emails with HTML you may find a HTML reader to be quite handy --- Empower and BBSmart are not free but both seem quite popular with stackers.

Have fun and let us know how we can help!

    EDIT

Of course - Pinstack Launcher - how could I miss that one? Good call diaz! Never be without your Pinstack!

Thank you guys both for your advice.

Sorry I have one other question. I'm on a plan where I pay $90 a month and I get 25MB of data. Approximately how much does that equate to in terms of searching web sites and would I be using that up if I were to use a program such as documents to go? LOL, sorry I know its a dumb question...

All this depends on your needs. What are you looking to do? We can suggest tons of apps but if they're not suited for your needs then it's all pointless.

As for the calendar -- give it a shot and see. Some find it adequate, some don't. Again, there's no universal answer here.

Rogers wireless. I actually I changed my plan so its only $80 a month. But with the 25MB I also get 350 anytime minutes and free evening and weekends.

The person I spoke to on the phone said that they had an unlimited plan for $90 but because of individuals, mainly companies, were downloading huge amounts they no longer have an unlimited plan.

well i don't remember or recall how much downloading will eat up, but just receiving the emails will not be a lot of data usage, you will want to see what you download though, i do recall that when you download apps from your blackberry, it will tell you how big the size is, but there might be others that will use more data in the background, i would check the statement or look online and see if there is a breakdown of data usage and see if you are getting close to your limit, then you would be able to either turn the data off, which would cause you to loose the recieving of email for a while. hope this helps

Welcome to Pinstack. I also just got my 8800. Very useful device. The GPS capability with Google maps - traffic, directions and address lookups - is a very useful combination. However, beware using it on a limited data plan. The data transfer is constantly flowing when it updates your location. I think this counts toward your monthly usage. I have T-mobile and I get unlimited data for 19.99/mo. So I don't have to worry about the data usage. Take care.

    Thanks Diaz.

Actually, I use it mainly for receiving and sending emails but I don't send or receive nearly as many emails most individuals do. However, I have to act on the emails I receive almost instantly for work which is the main reason I decided to get a BB.

As far as using the browser after playing around a bit I realized the sites I visit, it doesn't take up much data.

But I do appreciate the info. I admit I was very confused when I first tried playing around with my BB yesterday but I've learned a lot so far, and I have to attribute a great deal of this to not only this site but to the posts you guys have made as well.

    Thanks again.

LOL, I'm jealous of your plan bro!

I admit I know realize why so many people are using BB's its so useful and convenient.

I haven't used the GPS or Google maps yet. I probably will be using it though because I suck with directions, I guess I'll just have to use it sparingly.

Hope you guys have a great weekend!

I use on average like 3mb a month. I don't recieve many e-mails. just mostly surf the web ( daily. like four hours or more).... i dont know exactly how much usage 25mb is worth. but it sure does seem hard to get up there in one billing cycle.... good luck and welcome to the stacks!

    ~via BB (wap.pinstack.com)~

You might want to try MiniMoni (ehnert.net/minimoni/minimoni.jad) - a small traffic statistic program, that even warns you when you reach your traffic limit.
