So I need to unlock it, right? Verizon won't do this for me, will they? How can I do this? Is it hard?

even if you unlock it, it is not possible. You cannot use an 8800 or 8820 on verizon or sprint.
2 different types of wireless technology.

dubai is 100% correct, your GSM 8820 does not have the proper radio built into the device to make it work on Verizon's CDMA network, sorry
