8800 upgradeable as to data network?

Please forgive me if this has been discussed before. I couldn't find any previous discussion on this topic using the search function.

My question: Can the 8800 (or any other BB device) be upgraded so as to later take advantage of higher-than-EDGE-speed networks (EVDO, HDSPA, etc.)?

I really like the 8800 from what I have read about it, but I am concerned about the data speed. I would be willing to forgo wifi if I thought the device could later be upgraded in the event ATT/Cingy deign to make their 3G network available for the 8800, or if TMO ever gets a similar network rolling for the 8820.

Alternatively, can anyone currently using the 8800 on Cingular/ATT in the US tell me if the current EDGE network is acceptable or just too slow?

It just seems like a shame to tie such an otherwise robust device down in terms of its available data network...

Thanks in advance for all replies.

I did a side by side test on both. I used both to load ESPN and the 8700c was quicker. And in turn I did it again and the 8800 won. Third test did a page that was never viewed on either and the 8800 won.

What he is asking if a network say t-mobile or At&t upgrade their network for faster data. Will the 8800 be compatiable with the new network that should be rolled out this year or next?

Sorry, I guess I should have been more clear. I was only answering the last part of the post. The 8800 is running on Cingular and the 8700 was running T-Mobile and both are acceptable speeds.

paulsbb, do you typically browse sites that are optimized for mobile devices? If so, how fast/slow do those load? I know it's a totally subjective question, but I am looking for real-life experiences...

For me, browsing the web via EDGE service with a BB is a DRAG. I really only use it if there's NO WAY I'll be within reach of a PC any time soon.

I browse the gambit. When I browse the mobile optimized not bad at all. Pretty quick no bad at all. When I browse others(non optimized)for some reason the first time they are a little slow but they run faster the next time. From laptop Coffee shop wifi ESPN and from 8800 7 seconds later. Not bad for the page to pull up. Opera ran slower about 9 seconds later.

Links are sometimes slower and landing pages are a little quicker.

rim would probuly make 3g model for cingy/att soon. hopefully by the end of 07(can't wait).but if you're within one of cingular 3g cover area(about 150 major cities), you have 3g network. that will be nice if you can upgrade device with edge to 3g.I upgraded from a 7100 to a 8100 so far i'm satisfied with the speed.

Nope -- you need new radios for 3G and EVDO. It's a bit of a moot point anyway as rendering of web pages is a bottleneck...

Thanks for all of the replies. I dropped by a newer Cingular store to look at the 8800. The one they had wasn't hooked up, so I played around with the Pearl. Browsing was certainly not blazing, but websites optimized for mobile devices seemed to load up okay.

I am close to pulling the trigger on the 8800, but I have one more question: does Cingular rake you over the coals when you try to trade up your device while under contract? In other words, if I pick up the 8800 on Cingular today and then Cingular allows a future BB device access to its 3G network, will it be a ridiculous expense to get the newer device? I'm currently off-contract w/ TMO and their trade up offers are pretty awful.

as far as I know.. all companies have terrible trade up policies when still under contract because they dont make comission or anything.. although most companies(including cingular) have really good trade-in policies when extending/renewing your contract (if you talk to the right sales rep).

T-mobile is the best company about it. They have the best Customer Service in the business. When you call them. After you signed up for them...and your contract isn't over. Ask for a Customer Support Specialist. They should beable to take care of you.
