8800 in my hand

Just got my hands on one of our test 8800's. First impressions are pretty much what i expected.. It's a bigger version of the 8100! The keyboard has a nice feel to it although the keys are fairly compactly spaced. it's not hard to type on though.

It didn't have a camera, but did have Wi-fi. Might not be the final spec but thats what i'd expect.

The other thing that struck me was the weight. It's heavier than i expected. Still a lot lighter than my MDA but heavier than the 8700 i think. Slim tho, in terms of depth which is ok by me. My pocket would rather have a slim heavy device than a light fat one.

If anyone has any questions about it I can try to answer...

Can't vouch for the Battery life as I won't have it for that long

I tried the wifi, but so far haven't been able to get it connected to either our test network or our public hotspot. The test network I can kinda understand given it's locked up pretty tight (think it might have mac filtering on as well which explains that) but the publich hotspot should be ok. Although thinking about it... thats not been giving out IP address very well recently so maybe thats it.

Hmmm. that doesn't really help does it!

Somehow its a much more attractive device than the pearl, the bigger screen just looks... better. and the keyboard is a lot clearer than the Pearl.

It feels pretty solidly built and the Trackball is just as handy as on the pearl. In fact it's even more useful given the bigger screen. I'm impressed with the slimness of the device, and I like the colour, although I think i would probably go for a silver one if there was one.. all that black and "chrome" is quite overpowering.

Re: 8800 in my hand

~via BB (wap.pinstack.com)~from what you've seen in the 8800 is it worth trading the pearl for. Also does still have all the specs listed here on the stack, and do you think there will be a 8800 with the cam and vid cam, have you tried out streaming video, is the internet speed faster or slower. As you can see I have a lot of questions to ask.

Re: 8800 in my hand

hey miles troope could you do us all a big favor and test the device for at least 2 to 3 days or even a week and then get back to us w/all your observations and assetments. This way you will be able to answer our questions more definitively.

I would take the 880 over the Pearl, but then I would never take a Pearl. Its not that I'm dead against the non qwerty keyb, it's just of all the new devices released by Rim in my experience, the 8100 has had more bugs and problems than any other. I really don't know about the camera, but my gut feeling is that to include this would lose them a lot of sales with this business customers this is gonna be aimed at.

I haven't checked out the specs on the stack yet (I only joined yesterday!) but i'll have a look and see how it shapes up and post back ASAP.

Thank GOD Tmo is getting you guys to test it. Is there any word on the one with the camera, or even a possible price tag for these babies
