    8800 Data Speed

    Folks

Anyone now if they are planning to roll out any faster speeds for the 8800 ie G3 data speeds ? Its a very nice device the drawback seems to be the EDGE data speeds.

    Cheers and input welcome.

Depends if your carrier has 3g support, if they do...maybe the 8800 with get an update to use it.

    Re: 8800 Data Speed

As I understand it, Most of the carriers that have deployed the 8800 ie Tmobile, Verizon, Cingular/att and others have G3 networks, but I have not heard of any G3 speeds on the device. Anyone heard otherwise ?

    Cheers, input welcome.

There is no GSM BB currently available with 3G. EDGE gives you 50-90 kbps average, max of 236 kbps or about 285 on an upgraded tower.

From what I have read, the Verizon 8830 is EV-DO Rev A capable, which would make it 400-800 kbps average with a peak download speed of 3.1 mbps and 1.8 mbps upload.

An 8800 is an 8800. They're all the same and none of them are 3G. Not that it matters with the current OS and processor as those are your bottlenecks at the moment. Until they're replaced with faster counterparts it's a moot point except for tethering.

If a 3G 88xx comes along it will have a different model number.

The Blackberry 8707v (available from Vodafone in Europe) is using UMTS...

But besides that, what do you want to use the 3G in a BB for? Only useful application would be as a Modem for your PC, where you would go better with a 3G-USB-Modem (in my Eyes). The Browser is not useful enough to help you with browsing full pages and those optimized for the BB usually aren´t that large. And for E-Mail receiving: I'm using a 8800 and a Treo 750v with BBConnect (UMTS) and I tried it, the mails show up on both devices at exactly the same second....

I assume you mean that the 8800 will only be the 8800 and will not be a 3G device, not that (as I had originally understood it) the 8830 is not a 3G (which it is).

Technically, if the 8830 can use EV-DO, it would be classed as a 3G device I think. The 8707v menitoned in a previous post might be a 3G device but it is only GPRS capable in the US since it uses a differnt technology than is in use here.

I agree that 3 G won't make the BB that much better. Email is emial is email and one probably will not even notice the speed difference. Browsing might be slightly faster but no handheld is very good as a surfing device.

From what I understand the BB 8800 (Cingular) does not support 3G.

No (GSM) BB supports 3G in the US. The 8707v is 3G capable in Europe but only GPRS capable in the US. The 8300 is not either. I assume RIM will release on sometime however.
