    8300 os update

    Hey all.
I am totally unimpressed with the features of the 8300 but the os update looks cool with the media things and the built in spell check. I was wondering if this update will be available to 8800 users as well do you think?

    Thanks,
    Ian

I think the 8800 will get an os upgrade, as to when..your guess is as good as mine.

~via BB (wap.pinstack.com)~i was talking specifically with the features the 8300 os is gonna have. I just am basically wondering how good rim is with keeping old modules up to date with giving older modules new os updates.

To answer your question no this was not a big deal. Essentially the same os w/ some performance improvements to the best of my knowledge. I would like some of the options on the 8300 os on my 8800 ie media w/ full screen, spellcheck & folders (or so I've heard.

You'll probably see the 8800's OS updated to add folder management. No telling what other features RIM will bring to the 8800 though...

Generally with OS updates the issue isn't so much about RIM releasing updates as it is the carriers releasing the updates (since updated come via the carriers and not directly from RIM). I mean, 4.2 was released for the 8700's, for example.

Does this mean that the unit is updated automatically through the Rogers service provider?

No. You would need to download and install the updated firmware (BACKUP FIRST!) to get the update.

The only thing that the provider would send to all devices, generally speaking would be service book updates, which happens from time to time.
It doesn't record video. Get over it.

No -- updates have to be performed manually. It means that RIM releases OS updates to the carriers fairly regularly but it's up to the carriers to release the OS updates to their customers.
