Why Do Manufacterers Make Deals with Carriers?

Can anyone explain to me what's in it for phone manufacterers to allow their products to be exclusive to one carrier? For example, I understand why ATT wants to lock up the iPhone, but why would Apple want that? For BlackBerry, why wouldn't they want to release the Curve for every carrier at the same time?

Profit, short and simple. And to allow time to ramp up production. Plus it keeps prices artifically high.

    Anything else?

The most likely reason is simply profit, they can sign a deal to manufacture x amount of phones and that is a guarantee of money.
If they simply put it out there, they could possibly sell less phones.
Also for a carrier to have the newest is in their best interest.
More people jumping to a carrier because of a particular phone with contract is a sweet deal for carriers

It was Apple that wanted Verizon but big egos conflict like iTunes and Motorola. I am glad at&t got something good instead of T-Mobile for a change.

Same reason any business does anything -- money.

Can't speak specifically for RIM but as has already been mentioned it also does help to increase the hype and demand (just take a look at forum postings here).

Also to test for bugs and glitches. Better to make a smaller group of people upset then to launch to everyone. This way they can catch some of their problems.

You'd think that they would always launch with the smallest carriers if that was a real priority. It's certainly a bonus but sadly $$ is the real driving reason.

Yes they do, and the statistics really surprized me. It's been just long enough that I've forgotten the actual numbers and percentages, but I can assure you based on what I know, as conveyed to me by a major carrier that it's a lot larger number than most of us would imagine.

In addition, there is a recent discovery (by a group of attorneys) of a loophole in the ETFs used by two of the largest carriers. Once this is identified as an out, and revealed to the general public, suddenly the people that will be able to avoid paying the ETF fees, or even get them greatly reduced, will begin switching carriers immediately.

Questions that cause one to go... hmmm and begin thinking
