also, if you do go with cingular it is well worth getting the international calling plans. and you can cancel them when you get back.

I dont think it matters too much on actual service, you should be more concerned about rates.

Chris, service is much more important to me then rates. Thx all for the feedback. I just want a phone that works everywhere I will be travelling. All over Europe, Australia, Thialand, Philipenes, Japan.

To sign up for TMO's international calling is free. No need to cancel when you get back. There is no monthly charge abroad. Only usage charges.

Well most of the world is GSM, and I was under the impression that its not like here in the states, meaning no matter where you go and no matter what GSM provider you have, you will always have the same service. For example, if you go to Italy with TMO and Cingular they will both have the same service. Am I on the wrong boat?

Thats where I feel rates are more important. With Nextel if you go International you will not be able to come back, because you will be broke! LOL, I shouldnt say that, but it starts at about $2/minute and goes up to $15/minute.

Coverage is by far the most important variable in my decision.

You can use cingular or tmo you won't have any difference on the coverage 'cause like cp said what's realy important is GSM you'll be roaming the same network with tmo or cingular but the difference will be in the rate plan

    ~via BB (wap.pinstack.com)~

    Check out: http://www.gsmworld.com

That site lists just about every GSM provider and network coverage on the planet. It also lists which providers have roaming agreements with other providers.

Tmobile and Cingular may both be GSM, but they may not both have agreements with all the same carriers.

You may get service on a network while travelling with which you do not have a roaming agreement, and therefore may get stuck with outrageous roaming rates.

As well, Japan doesn't use GSM or CDMA (as far as I know). They have their own proprietary and superior wireless system. When you get to an airport, you should be able to find a wireless store which will rent you a phone into which you would put your own SIM.

At least that how it was the last time I checked. (I had a friend from Tokyo visit, and his mobile didn't work at all, and it's because the Japanese system is not available anywhere else.)

T-Mobile is a Deutsch Telecom company. It's an international company that originated in europe. I'm assuming they would have more towers/service agreements...
