Question Warning when Charging on diff. PC

I'm at my dad's for the weekend and I'm trying to charge my BB via the USB port. I get the following message on my BB.

USB charging current is not sufficient. Verify that yo ur handheld is connected to a powered USB charging source and that the proper USB driver is installed.

The phone shows that it's charging (the little plug indicator is on). The PC I'm using is a brand new HP with USB High speed. What driver are they talking about???

    Thanks,
    Lis

USB ports ordinarily don't allow sending more than 100 mA over the wire. The Desktop Manager comes with a driver that allows sending 500 mA over the wire when the BlackBerry is connected.

Without that driver, it will charge very slowly, or not charge at all.

Install the DM and you should be able to charge via USB without any problems.

I was trying to avoid having to load it on this PC, but I guess I will. Thanks for the help.

In the related thread (Charging 8703e on PC without software install), there is a description for extracting the USB driver from the DM installation file. It's about 30 kB that way, which is much less hefty than the entire DM installation.

It probably won't help in your current situation, but in the future, you could install just the driver.

It also depends which USB port you try to use. The hubs on the flat screen monitors and backs of keyboards are not, typically, fully charged and won't provide adequate power (even with the DM installed). In my case, the back of the keyboard hub worked to charge the BB, but not nearly as fast. I talked with our IT guy and he confirmed this. That being the case, I have moved to one of the ports at the back of the pc and do not get BB error msgs anymore.

    Update:

Just go to the RIM download page.
    http://na.blackberry.com/eng/services/desktop/

Choose which one you want to download.

When you get to the "download here" page, scroll all the way down and just download the USB drivers.

Install them (takes like 30 seconds to download, 10 seconds to install) and then you will be able to charge.

    Try this one, too:

    https://www.blackberry.com/Downloads/browseSoftware.do

Should take you right to the screen where you select what version you want to download.
