Well if it's unlocked properly (code provided by carrier) then the only disadvantages are what the network offers and doesn't offer. For instance, you can unlock an AT&T Curve for another network, but won't have access to AT&T's Media Mall.

You can unlock a Verizon device for Sprint and won't have any access to their particular data content. There's certain providers that patent certain data features, those features won't be usable on another network.

I would think the only drawback is that I think you can't unlock CDMA devices and run them on a GSM network, due to no sim card. Unless someone has found a way to get them to work?
It's not an iPhone addiction, it's insomnia!

No real disadvantages to unlocking a GSM network phone. Always better to have if you're wanting to keep your phone and switch carriers.

No real advantage either if your planning on staying with the same carrier. It does help on the resell value of the phone if you intend to sell it at a later time.

I'm not really sure about the CDMA carriers though. They just recently started to unlock phones for customers so its kinda new. I know its a little more complicated and I'm not familiar with it.

Verizon does have the world phone so its CDMA and also has a SIM card. That's the 8830.

    Hope that helps.

Well then the only issues there are:

if the 9XXX is 3G and TMO hasn't rolled out their network you will still be stuck on EDGE.

Other than that no real issues.

And I am sorry I am new at the unlock phones stuff, but...

How do you unlock them anyway?

I know that's probably a broad question, but try to answer? Lol.

you have to obtain a unlock code either from your carrier, or from another source-such as ebay.
