To drain the battery or not to drain the battery

That is the question. When you first recieve your BB, did you (or should you) drain your battery then recharge it? I'm not exactly sure how this works... someone explain.

No, I dont believe that is necessary or even a good idea. I have also read that repeatedly allowing your battery to drain completly can be harmful.

Good question! What about with the Seidio extended battery? Should that be allowed to drain all the way?

Re: To drain the battery or not to drain the battery

With the old Nicad technology that held a memory of charges you wanted to drain the battery on a regular basis to reset that memory so it would take a full charge.
Then came Ni-Mh batteries. Those batteries theoretically no longer held memory of charges. You could charge them every night if you wished. In practice, it was still a good idea to do a full discharge and recharge about once every couple of months to refresh the battery.
Next we have Li-Ion batteries. These batteries do not maintain a memory of charges but have a limited charge life (approxiametely 500 cycles according to some info I found). It is also recommended by every battery manufacturer I have seen on their website in their FAQ state to not drain the battery completely intentionally. Draining it intentionally could cause permanent damage to the internal cells.
Now we have Li-Polymer batteries. These are improvements on Li-Ion in battery life and power. I don't have much info on these.

Nice link. A lot of info I had guesses about but wasn't able to confirm in writing along with some new info I didn't know about before.

~via BB (wap.pinstack.com)~ keep it charged, but let it run low approximately every 30 cycles. Don't let it die though as that will affect the long term life of the battery.

    Nicky,
Don't go crazy - it'll make you nuts! lol These batteries a pretty tough little critters and can take quit a bit a work during their lives. You ought to see what the lower side of 50% some time just so you'll know - make yourself do it - you'll feel better.

When I had my 7100t and 7105t, I used to always forget to keep the batteries charged and let them get below 20% power and get the "Low Battery" reminder on the screen. I have been better since getting the Pearl.
