Does Constant Access Shatter the Home/Work Boundary?

Posted by Zonk on Friday December 14, @07:22AM
    from the and-is-that-a-bad-thing dept.

StonyandCher has passed us a link to PCWorld.au, once again raising the tough topic of work/life separation. A department of the Australian government went ahead with a purchase of dozens of Blackberry communication devices, but is now delaying their deployment. The reason: "Staff expressed fears about BlackBerries contributing to a longer working day and felt it was going a step too far because mobile phones are adequate for out-of-office contact. Not everyone agreed, however, with some senior executives claiming a BlackBerry can contribute to work/life balance by facilitating telecommuting and more flexible schedules. " For the time being this issue is on hold for those staffers, but how does this issue fall for you? Is constant accessibility freeing or just another chain around your neck?

~via BB (wap.pinstack.com)~i think they don't want them because they will get addicted to them. They do turn off so just turn it off on the weekend.

the ONLY way i have found to be able to NOT use my bb on vacations and such is to truly go where there is NO signal...otherwise, i'd be sneaky

otherwise, day or night, work is work ... if your company gave you a bb, it was for a reason

THAT was the shock at Yosemite ... not the breathtaking Nature (validated by Ansel Adams or not ).
On the way back to San Francisco it came alive and was jingling for half an hour, updating mail. Ode to Joy

Yes Cherri, it WAS for a reason... precisely! And when it comes to no longer having any of your time to yourself, you have to wonder whether the compensation is worth it.

You might elect to change bosses, as I did -- now I have the BEST boss in the world

Or, you might want to conveniently forget the BB at the office weekends.
    So sorry

All I can say about it is having my BB has given me more freedom from work. Before, I would have to go in to work to address issues, now having the email,etc- a group response and still sitting in the recliner...All that is needed now is Documents to Go to speed things up. Come on already.

Fine if it works for you. I do find out though that even now, I do have it "unavailable" on occasion... Tethered to my computer as a modem, it is busy downloading -- and I leave it home

Leaving it on during the weekend is less stressful. When I wake up early Saturday morning, something from work always enters my brain, usually something I forgot to take care of Friday. Choice: Leave it off, then stress all weekend about the task I forgot Friday; or leave it on, fire off a message to one of my supervisors to get it taken care of, then enjoy the rest of the weekend.

Work is work and has to be done whether I have a BB or not. Having a BB gives me the freedom to take two hour lunches.

I used to work for a guy who would get drunk watching Sunday football. From 8:30 on he would send out rambling, incoherent messages and I learned to put my BB to sleep at 8 pm...
