Taking a look at the trackball cleaning guide, we may not want to use something like a steel ball, the rollers for the trackball assembly are magnetic, and I could see that causing problems.

Does that mean there is a magnet in the trackball itself? Is that part of the way it stays onto the track assembly? If so what then?

    Bump for interest.

Also, I may make a run to the hardware store this weekend, I will pick up a few different ones and try it out.

Hey everyone.... I CAN MAKE GLASS BALLS!!!!!!!!!

I haven't read this whole thread yet, but...

I happen to be a glass blower that works with a bench torch. I use borosilicate glass which is a hard glass. A common brand name of this glass is known as Pyrex. I can absolutely make little glass balls that could replace the roller ball on the blackberry. I am also looking to buy a sandblaster for sandblasting my glass art. The only thing I need to get is a caliper so that I can make them exactly 5.5 mm. I can do this. I was trained in scientific glaasblowing which is an exact science.

I CAN MAKE THEM OUT OF COLORED GLASS....this would be sweet. IT would be an awesome subsitute for the colored balls of the pearl 8100!
I am definitely going to look into this some more and try to make a proto type to see how it works. If it works good, I will start a new thread with pictures.

PM me if your interested. If enough people are interested, I might start producing them.

My mind is already racing with ideas.... Colored balls, sandblasted balls, multi-colored balls, swirls, filagrees, and murinis(miniture pictures like in fimo). I could even make mini implosions or encasements perhaps. I love working on a tiny scale for intricate details.

    Custom glass scroll marbles/balls anyone?

When I think about it, they probably wouldn't work with smooth glass. It would probably have to be sandblasted in order for it to grip. The smooth glass spinning might not get registered. I do not know though.

I am going to make this happen.
I will definitely need to buy a sandblaster though. I will make a few to try out and get them sandblasted at a friend's shop. If it works I will buy a sandblaster and sell them if there is enough interest.

    Glass scroll balls

I thought I would start a thread here in the general BB discussion area about this.

Dude, if you can do it I would for sure buy a few from you. Is there any way you could get a real small image and put that in the glass as you're doing that?
