For extra security, all GSM and 3G/3.5G/UMTS phones can be protected by a PIN (personal identification number), which some service providers have enabled by default.

If you enter your PIN incorrectly three times, the SIM/USIM will then ask for a personal unblocking key (PUK), which must be obtained from your service provider - once this code has been entered, you can then create a new PIN...

Just be aware that if the PUK is entered incorrectly ten times, the SIM/USIM will "burn itself out" and must then be physically replaced by your service provider.
