    Online Security

I'm thinking about getting a Blackberry... I just joined this forum, so I apologize if this question has been posted before...

I plan to mainly use my Blackberry for getting my e-mail when I'm on the road, but I was wondering how secure Blackberrys are for surfing the web. For example, is it safe and/or possible to order items online (e.g. at Amazon.com) or bid on ebay items? I read somewhere that "e-mail is secure but there is little or no provision for securely surfing the Internet."

    Thanks your help

    Re: Online Security

Browsing is as secure as using a desktop PC . Secure sites with have the secure icon. Privacy may be an issue if you get your Blackberry through your company and not via a mobile carrier. See here for more.

You will have certificates for your BB browser just like you do with a browser on your PC. these certificates will authinticate and verify security of the sites you're browsing.

For example, verisign has certificates for the BB browser.

To bad I can't get www.bankofamerica.com working on my 7100. It just refuses to login for some reason.

Does anyone have any experience with S/MIME and enabling that on a BB handheld? I have a BB enterprise server? Any drawbacks?

    Re: Online Security

Hi - I've got another security type question...

I just got a 7105t BlackBerry... when I browse to a site like ebay.com, the sign-in page has the SSL "lock" icon at the top. However after I sign in, and i'm looking at things in "My ebay" the icon is now "unlocked." Should I only be seeing the "lock" icon on pages where I'm logging into an account?

Sorry if this is a dumb question - I'm kind of ignorant when it comes to online security....

It's the same way for me, even on my PC. If I'm not mistaken, it's only when you're sending secure information that the page is SSL. I guess ebay doesn't encrypt every page. Just login information and payments and such.

Thanks for the response Ben Have you had any luck with PayPal? When I log in, all I see are decimal amounts (.XX - not the full amount XX.XX). I'm hoping I can solve this problem, because I want to be able to send payments, etc. when I'm on the road.
