Isn't it interesting... holding the handset to your ear and talking while driving is against the law (and carries a whopping $20 fine )... but texting is NOT!

Can you steer with your knees while composing an SMS?!

Actually with some practice you can SMS single-handedly, keyboarding with
your thumbnail, like I do. Needless to say, it is more dangerous than holding the BB to your ear!

what do you mean texting isn't? if anything texting is worse. Here in Jersey you get fined no matter what. and the fine's not only $20 it's more like a $100 then $150 thir time you get sanctioned community service or possible suspension i believe. They're serious in the tri state area.

in florida it's now illegal to text and drive. if you are caught you are charged with reckless driving and i think your license is suspended

In California, however, it took 5 years to get the bill passed into law -- and the sponsor did not want to risk it by striving for too much! So he left texting out!

Actually, in egregious cases you can still be cited by the CHP under something
generic -- reckless driving or so.

I'm ashamed I'm living here in Cali with these moron politicians. Using the phone while driving is illegal but texting is still ok?! And it took 5 yrs for this bill to become a law?!

Uhhm... having said that, I am bound to mention this is the city on whose freeways

-- a man was observed shaving while driving

-- a woman was observed applying base... eyelashes... mascara... lipstick...
all the way to full make-up .

I suppose THAT is what the handy mirror in the car is for.

You mean the mirror on the reverse of the moveable sun guards? That's WORSE  --at least, with the rear-view mirror you still have peripheral vision of the road

Very simple solution as we have had this law in Ireland for a few years. Just buy a bluetooth car kit. I bought a Parrott one from ebay and works well and it was not that much.

What can possibly be so important that one must pick up the phone to reply to a text or call? Listen unless you're a doctor or priminister then maybe and that's a big maybe you might get a break that is if it's a matter of life and death. But if you're picking up the phone simply because your friend just called you because he/she's bored and deided to call you; you deserve to get pulled over and hit with a baton. I hate people being on the phone ,A friend of mine died because some idiot was on the phone and cut him off without even blinking. All those idiots deserve to die. Get a bluetooth.
