See the responses on blackberryforums.com. Unless you are on BES, you are probably SOL.

If its a BES device, your IT Administrator can remotely wipe it. If its a personal phone, as long as you had it password enabled, anyone trying to guess the password will cause the device to wipe after the 10th incorrect password attempt.

If you didn't have it password enabled, this might be a painful lesson to you.

The question Ive always had, is after they enter the password wrong 10 times will it disable the device or will they still be able to use it (just with your data gone)?

the password only get deactivated if the user does so by entering the password multiple times when prompted...as long as your phone is password protected you should be fine...you should get your service suspended anyways that way they can't do anything with your phone...sorry that's a rough situation...hope everything works out

When a password is entered incorrectly ten times, the device wipes itself then prompts for a new password. After that, it can be used by anyone, but all of the previous owner's information is erased.

I would. However, it's up to you.

No. Anything you want to do with your handheld, you only need to type in your password once.

Is there any software available that could wipe the device if it receives a special SMS message? I've seen ones for some Palm devices, and I think maybe a windows mobile app, too. You pick the mesage content that will trigger a "hard reset" and if the device receives such an SMS, the devices is wiped clean. (Of course, you have to be sure not to let your friends know that special message, or you will undoubtedly find yourself the object of a prank. At least you would with my friends.)

Was the device GPS enabled? If so, I would track it down...

Sorry to hear that, actually, have your try these? I was able to find these that can help “remotely” erase your phone info. It’s worth a look. Seems like an alternative to erase your phone.

    mobilesky.com – remote erase
    spritesoftware.com – backup

    Good Luck.

Incorrect. After the 10th incorrect password the device will wipe all user data, and ask for a new password when it comes back up.

    ~via BB (wap.pinstack.com)~

My phone was pissing me off so I typed in the wrong password (and Blackberry a few times) and it wiped everything off and then performed a 30 minute long "scrub" and when it finished it was like a brand new phone....nifty I thought!
