Moving Overseas, do I have to give up my Blackberry?

I found out that I'll be stationed overseas in Japan with the military shortly. I have about 20 days left on my AT&T contract before it becomes upgrade time, which is lucky, because I know for sure my Pearl can't handle the Japanese cell phone network. I want to upgrade to the Curve, but I think it suffers the same issue as the Pearl. Is it possible for any of the modern Blackberries to handle the US and Japanese phone networks (as well as anywhere else I might be stationed like England, Germany, etc)? Or am I going to have to find a new smartphone and give up my baby?

Yeah I don't think they will be. Since it's a totally different network.

Doesn't NTT DoCoMo have the 8707? That works in Japan but not elsewhere. Not sure if they have any updated berries.

I'd read about that, but from what I understand it doesn't work worth a hoot. Seems also like the World Edition would be out as well. Only thing I can guess is maybe the Bold as it seems to have rumors of support?

The problem is that there are several different "standards" int he Far East. Japan on CDMA2100, Korea on a version of CDMA and limited GSM, and most other countries with GSM.

    Which branch?

Don't drink the solju in Asia, no matter what anyone tells you. Lost 3 platoon members to it.

I was at Yokota 1977-1980. Had a great time. But then I was constantly ont he road as a flyer. Dollar was much better than it is now. The base has been upgraded - I think it has a Burger King or McDonald's now. Didn't have that when I lived there.
