    from the unit itself, how can you tell if a phone is locked to a carrier or unlocked?

    Go into Options>Advanced Options>SIM Card, then type Shift+MEPD.

    This will bring up a list of SIM personalizations. Locked devices typically have Network personalization "Active", while unlocked devices have that as "Disabled".

    MEPD is correct, but ya don't have to use shift . . .

    Same - except hit the "OP" key twice. Type "M" "ER" "OP" "OP" "DF". If any of the fields show "active" then the handheld is locked.
