Yep! This is my first smartphone! Although I had a handspring before, I never bought the addition that would've given it telephonic capabilities! I can say this though, I'll never go back to anything other than a BB!!!

Yep, this is my first smartphone..........and boy is it smart. I absolutely love it and can't imagine giving it up. I've owned PDAs in the past (Palm XVII and Dell Axim X50) and they were definitely lacking in the phone dept. It was such a pain in the but to carry two devices.......and that was cutting edge technology at the time. I love my BB and don't plan on purchasing any other brand.

I tried all the others first -Treo-Moto Q-Blackjack.

None of these are as good as a BlackBerry.

However I would not have known that if I did not have the first hand experience with the others.

My first was the Nokia 6620. Then Nokia 6682, Treo 650, BB 8700c, Nokia E62 and tomorrow the 8100c. So far the 6682 and 8700c are the best.

    (Based in uk)Started with:
1)Palm connected via IR to a nokia 8310. Worked very well www and emails
2)Mitsubishi Trium connected pda winCE grayscale screen. Battery didn't last long and it lost its settings if the battery ever died completely and used up the backup battery fast
3)3G motorola A920 huge phone symbian OS. Patchy coverage of 3G at the time. Bad battery life it even came with extra battery. Video calling was amusing. But I found most women hated the video calling and never answered those video calls.
4)Nokia N-Gage symbian OS funny little thing but the 3D games were surprising as was the video playback. Usable. But was embarrassing to use in public because of the dumbo ear/ taco ear look.
5)O2 xda original. Nice touchscreen usable but the menu system is so confusing and unintuative compared to symbian and had so so battery life
6)BB 7100v great screen and features. Realized from here on the BB was a real business phone everything else are just toys. One thing I hated was the cpu wasn't fast enough and was too slow cycling through emails. Other than that was perfect
7)BB 7290v absolutely perfect. I lost some featured from the 7100 but the keyboard was and is still the best ever made. Great battery life and its built so solidly its like a tank. I've seen some that looked like they've been used as door stops and hockey pucks and they still work perfectly and have strong signal. Classic BB
8)BB 8100 didn't like the keys. Too soft, slippery, and wiggly. OS features are great additions. Gave it back cos it was a faulty handset after 2 days. It had bad receptiona and had to reboot itself 5x a day. The mp3 player, video player, camera were an interesting diversion but I doubt I would keep using them. The memory card feature is great and is a welcome new feature. Still undecided with the trackball. I can live with it, but, the trackwheel is just so much more
9)8700 on tmob. Great screen and better OS. Not bothered with the loss of the multimedia functions. But I miss the loss of memory card. Great phone even if it doesn't feel as robust as the 7290 and the keyboard keys are closer together.

Sidekick was my first then I had bb from tmobile Nextel and Verizon. I don't think I could ever go back to a regular phone either. Upgrading from the 7130e to the 8703e at the end of the month. Can't wait.

My Pearl is my first smart phone. I came pretty close to buying a black Moto Q but the push email functionality sold me on the Pearl.
I've only had my BB for a week now - it's been a bit of a learning curve after 8 years using a Palm Pilot - no regrets, I like my Pearl.

Re: Is bb your first smartphone?

    Good question

Smartphone is a relatively new term for a rapidly growing segment of the cell phone market.

A smartphone is a device that has multiple capabilities.

    Such as:
    1- cell phone
    2- email device
    3- organizer or pim
    4- text msg
    5- MMS. Msg
    6- internet browser
    7- camera
    8- music player
    9- video camera

This is a list of the various functions of todays smartphones. Some feature all these functions and more, while some devices that are primarily for business like some BlackBerry models will have fewer items like no camera or music player.

    Hope this helps.

    Cheers
