Do UR Thumbs Hurt?
Too much text messaging has left your hands cramped and your thumbs throbbing. Here's how to soothe your aches
by Amanda MacMillan
(March 1, 2007)--Talk about typos! The latest health threat sweeping the nation? BlackBerry Thumb. The ailment was even recently recognized as an official workplace injury by the American Physical Therapy Association.
The condition's trademark throbbing or numbness of the hand can be caused by excessive use of any handheld e-mail device, or even frequent cellular text messaging.
Avoid career catastrophe. Do this stretch at least once for every half hour you spend typing: Spread your fingers open wide, hold for 10 seconds, and repeat eight times.
Quick! Try this. Re-create your own "BlackBerry Balm" massage offered by a growing number of Hyatt Hotel spas: Apply heat, lotion, and pressure to the fingers and thumbs. Then e-mail your friends about how awesome it was.
