Hey guys, just a quick question...
i was scrolling aroung in my options and was in the sms section. i clicked on it, and one of the choices was data encoding. its set at 7 bit. the other options are ucs2 and 8 bit. does anyone know what this is used for? i didnt touch it and dont plan on it. i was just wondering what its purpose was. any ideas? thanks in advance for your help

    Re: Data Encoding?

The 7 bit is only for the standard text messages of 160 characters, with each charachter being 7 bits according to the 7 bit default alphabet. The 8 bit is not viewable on phones as text messages, they are used for smart messages such as ringtones or images and OTA provisioning of WAP settings. UCS2 is 16 bit, 70 character message that is viewable on most phones. It is often seen as a blinking or alert SMS.

Hope this helps to explain this.

I tried it once, everything failed....or maybe it was the networks I was playing with. One or the other. Yea I think it was which network to send it over. Nevermind...hehe

Well, as far as I understand, if you put it on 8 bit you would not be able to send viewable messages. If you tried the 16 bit you would be unable to send anything viewable unless you knew the proper way to encode for a blinking sms.
