Exactly why I'm glad I have the insurance thru my carrier. I could see myself doing something like this.

    Re: Cracked Blackberry

The wonder of the search function brought me to this thread. I cracked the plastic cover for the screen on my 8700C. I am looking at the links on this thread, but if any one has some input on the 8700, I would appreciate it.

Are we talking the actual lcd screen? Or the plastic cover that goes over it? There is a difference...

I'm pretty certain that it is the plastic cover.

I don't have an 8700, but maybe someone could inspect theirs to see if there is a way to remove the plastic over the screen. Then, if there is, you could get a dummy model on eBay, and swap...

    How can you tell?

I feel like an idiot, but how do I know if I cracked the plastic or the screen? I was on a roller coaster last week, my purse at my feet, and I accidentally kicked the purse. When I pulled out the BB (8700c), there was a crack. I'm now hoping it's just in the plastic.
I've been using it. It's sort of like a windshield crack and still works and is legible. I thought I just had to live with it. (I hate that Cingular wouldn't provide insurance on this.)

More than likely it's the outer housing...

The only way you will know FOR SURE is to somehow get a look at the screen, which would mean taking apart the device...

HOWEVER, if it looks like a windsheild crack and you don't see any blurryness or anything around it, it's probably just the outer housing...There's a good 1/8 inch of so of space between the screen itself and the housing...

If you have a good digicam, snap a pic and let's see..

    it was the cover

I can report that BBrepairshop provides quick shipping, useful, easy to follow directions and the proper shell for the 8700. Even though I am not the least bit mechanically inclined, I did the swap of the cover shell in 20 minutes. If the cover just looks like a cracked pane of glass, but the screen image itself is not distorted, you may just have the cracked cover pane as I did.

My only regret is that BBrepairshop has never sent the coupon code that I requested several months ago, so that thread is not helpful. I had to pay full price.
