Looks like there is a difference. Have five different BBs, dual mode, but running on gsm-all have service center number. Checked one of my Nokias on CDMA-it doesn't have a service center option. This Pinstack is a great place to learn. Would love to hear from other stackers

Whatever be the case, PIN or data service (for mms) not required for sms

My brother and I both have BB and while I occasionally text others, I can't text him.....he called his carrier and had SMS disconnected. Not everyone can send/receive SMS.

Either he has SMS disabled, has blocked you (carriers let you block specific numbers from calling/texting), or he has a corporate BlackBerry whose policy manager has restricted SMS.

My friend called AT&T Wireless and they told him that he's using a private line and that's why he can't send/receive SMS. The only way you would know is by calling the provider since the phone doesn't give you any type of error/warning when you send an SMS.
He has a corporate BlackBerry so I assume that dgburns' last post is correct.
Thanks for the info.
