Question Bricked my MicroSD card somehow, (i think)

So I bought a 4gig card a few days back.
Transferred everything from my 2gig Micro to my PC, put the 4gig card in my BB, transferred everything to the 4gig, all was well in the world.
Last night I was editing .Mp3 properties on the card via Windows so the song title and artist would show correctly (right click .MP3 > properties > advanced)

For some reason I decided to encrypt my Micro card once I finished with editing the .mp3 properties.
(on BB > options > media card)
Turned on encryption (security password & device) as well as media file encryption.
I was just messing around with options. Everything worked fine last night and this morning, however after a battery pull, I get a message that states:

"A media card has been inserted that is not formatted. Please format the card."
    Grrrrrr.

So I have tried multiple battery pulls, as well as removing the card and putting it back in to no prevail. When I get home I will try and plug the BB into my PC to see if I can see the contents. I can try the SD adapter as well.

I am not concerned if I do in fact have to format the card as I have the media backed up . I am trying to figure out if enabling the encryption on the media card through the BB options actually caused this to happen. Or if its just a bad MicroSD.

Also does anyone know the difference between the available encryption options:
    Device
    Security Password
    Security Password & Device

What are the benefits of each for example.

I was under the impression that by enabling media card encryption as well as encrypting the files, the MicroSD wouldn't work in another device.
Thanks in advance for any thoughts on the matter

I have experienced this same thing, just two days ago. I have not come to a final conclusion, and explanation just yet, however I will share what I know so far.

    1) You do not have a bad media card.
However it does matter what brand (there are a few exceptions see below) , it is as some of the OEM's format them a bit differently. Thus if you simply use the card without formatting it before first use in your BB, every file you put on the card will be affected.

Exceptions: I have not had this issue with A-Data, Kingston, Transend brands.

    2) Your PC will "read it" even when your BB cannot. This is because XP / Vista have many file formats that they deal with and the default setting allows many more file formats & types to be read, than the BB does.

    3) I'm in the process of dialogging now with a contact, that has access to a internal knowledge base that will provide some additional info.

    4) I do know that it is indeed a file format / card format issue.

It was an off brand card from a local computer place.

So if Windows will reocognize the contents, I should in theory, be able to dump everything back to windows (since I have added stuff that is different from the original 2gig backup), format the card, and replace the content.

I wonder if running the disk defrag would do anything? Maybe I'll try that after a backup prior to formatting the card. Might as well defrag after restoring the card as well.

    Thanks for your thoughts Archer.

Just a comment, I had an error on mine the other day, but it said something like I had an error reading the card and it suggested running the windows repair utilitiy. I was a little hessitant but did the 45 min utility on my card through the blackberry usb, and now it works fine again. I think it would not hurt for you to try the repair utility or even the defrag, however in this case I think that you should save all new files to your PC and format the card from the BB, then reload all your files.

In the case of an off brand (or most others for that matter) in the future I might suggest that you format it first before using it.

I'm now formatting all cards, (I tend to swap cards a few times per day, as I have a lot of files that I carry, or want to use in my BB) prior to use. Since I have employed this practice I have not had a single problem.

Now that you are having this issue, yes you should be able to move the files to your PC. Then reformat the card with the BB, after which you can use Mass Storage Mode to move the files back onto the card. The mere movement _to_ your computer will restore the file types normal architecture. Therefore defrag is not needed, unless you want to do it as a maintenance routine if it's not been done recently.

What is really important to take away from this is to always format any new card with the BB first, even though many will argue against this. From a technical standpoint this is the correct thing to do. Do NOT format the card in by placing it in an PC card adapter or a any other reader connected to your computer, as it will be formatted in a way that will make it vulnerable to a repeat event.

    Cheers!........

Like Archer said, ALWAYS format a new card. Im kind of surprised it read it in the first place without formatting it first. Mine always tells me that I need to format the media card to continue.

PC could not access the MicroSD card. Oh well. Formatted and restored my files from my original 2gig card. Now I am using MediaMonkey to add album art and correct ID3 tags like I should have done a long time ago.

What OS is on your PC? If XP: is it SP2 or SP3?

How were you trying to access the card, via USB cable connected to BB?
Or did you have the card out and installed in a reader?

What version of desktop manager? What version OS on your BB?

I would really like to help you get this resolved as it's really nice to have full access to the card from your PC. I'm sure if I have enough info on your setup, we can resolve this together.

    Cheers.....

    Windows XP SP 1 lol
(could have used my g/f's laptop with SP2, just like my PC better)

    BB 8130 4.3 OS running DM 4.3.

I used the USB cable (i dislike Roxio's media manager so I didn't even try that) . I have already moved beyond that step though as I have formatted the card. I have my files back on the card and all is well in the world again. Thanks for your help again.

Great to hear that you have things they way you want them. I too dislike Roxio, and was happy to see that RIM offers a version of DM without it. That's the one I use and could not be happier.

    Cheers
