    Blackberry LEDs

I love ColorPearl, but I was just wondering why RIM put colored LEDs in the trackball if it wasn't going to be used as a function, or perhaps in some sort of future firmware update? I know that there are third party programs out there that can make it flash red on an email or something, but since they discontinued it in later models, it seems a little redundant.

The colour leds can be used without any 3rd party applications. They flash to the beat of a ringtone when ringtone lighting is set to trackball in phone options.

How do you know that there wasn't an intended purpose for the colored LED's?

    Re: Blackberry LEDs

I think the Color LED's was a SWEET little addition, but just blinking to the beat of ringtone and such doesn't seem like enough (stock)...thank goodness for 3rd party apps!!

But I'm not sure why RIM decided to remove the LED's from the newer models!!!

I love the Color LED's under my trackball.........

I think the ability to change trackball color should have been a stock option. At least on the consumer models. I really wonder why the color leds were only in 1 model.

I wish blackberry would put it in all the pearls- not just the GSM ones! Hubby has GSM and I have CDMA. I gave up colored LEDs for a video cam and newer OS

the reason why they used multiple color leds is because "white" light is made up of multiple LED colors together in the spectrum.

now the newer pearls only have single white light LED's which is the same thing but now you cant use a 3rd party app to use each of the other color LED's

I asked the same question about a month ago, and received a very plausible answer, which makes sense. RIM marketed the 8800 and 8300 series towards the business community, and the 81xx series for personal use-hence colored LEDs.

just wanted to add that the pearl does have a function for the leds in the stock options.

you can choose for the leds to blink different colors when receiving a call by doing this:
    Phone/Call Log>General Options>Ringtone Lighting>Trackball or off

But, they only have this option on the 8100, the newer 8110-8130 don't.
